Erik Cain joined the marines to get off death row. The deal was simple; enlist to fight in space and he would be pardoned for all his crimes. In the 23rd Century, assault troops go to war wearing AI-assisted, nuclear-powered armor, but it is still men and blood that win battles. From one brutal campaign to the next, Erik and his comrades fight an increasingly desperate war over the resource rich colony worlds that have become vital to the economies of Earth's exhausted and despotic Superpowers.

    Jack Brown says: "Refreshing"

If you like "Old Mans War" your going to like this - it follows the same type of story, Marines fighting bad guys, and not winning every time; Earth is a mess, your only real chance at a life is to get off the crumbling rock. There's the "Have's" and the "Have-nots", screw up and you go from being a "Have" to a "Have-Not", or even worse prison, and death. Maybe if you're lucky the Marines will come and recruit you.

Another day, another planet at war. But in David Drake's ''Choosing Sides',' Lieutenant Huber stepped off the starship right into an ambush. The attackers didn't survive, but neither did far too many of Huber's troops - and Slammers aren't supposed to get caught in ambushes.

This first volume covers our heritage, our links to England, how the colonies grew, the mighty force of religion in early America, and the oppression felt by the colonists. It describes why our ancestors fought for their beliefs, and their efforts to create a government limited in scope by checks and balances so that it would not have the power to oppress the people.

Why we think it’s a great listen: If you ever thought history was boring, David McCullough’s performance of his fascinating book will change your mind. In this stirring audiobook, McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence, when the whole American cause was riding on their success.

Would you listen to 1776 again? Why?

So much history I was never presented with in school. I don't think you can take it all in the first time.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 1776?

Finding out that the framers of our nation had such expansive personal library's was new to me.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This is a long book, however, if you are on a long drive, it would be a great book for you.

2019. Six years after the Jakarta Pandemic “decimated” the world's population; life is back to normal for the Fletchers and most Americans. The United States stands at the brink of a complete domestic and international resurgence, with stories of confidence and prosperity dominating the headlines. Appearances can be deceiving. An undercurrent of paranoia and fear still runs strong below the surface; the collective angst spawned by 28 million American deaths forever stamped into population's psyche.

If you listened to the Jakarta Pandemic this series ties in quite well, however, if you didn't listen to JP, then you don't feel like you missed the start of the series.

    I'm now waiting for Book 3 :)

There's "hole" in the recording at 6:13:37, it seems to skip a few seconds - by no means does it hurt the story, or even detract. Just an error in the recording.

With that out of the way, this is a REALLY good book and can't wait for Book 3. Like book 1 it leaves you hanging and wanting more. If you liked Book 1 you'll like Book 2
