This book was horrible. I thought it would have lots of cute doggie stuff in it. It has some, but few and far between. Mainly it's about an unlikeable jerk of a guy, and is full of bad language and vulgar situations. I listened until it was halfway through and it got worse, not better. After getting through half of it, I couldn't even finish it, it was so bad.
It was very interesting to listen to this book and the take of someone who works year after year with gang members. His point of view of compassion and unconditional love was challenging for me but it gave me lots of food for thought and a different way to think about "those people" such as gang members in a different light, and also how God views all of us.
I know a lot of people were mad when Patterson left Cross My Heart as a cliffhanger. This book makes up for it. It was the best Alex Cross I've listened to. It was cool how the various characters stepped up and helped Alex, and I liked the part where he paired up with Ava and how she was brought into the story. I suppose some might be surprised by some of the twists - as a frequent Alex Cross listener I found them to be rather predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless. Great book. Patterson, please keep letting Alex have happy endings, and Nanna Momma, as well as the rest of his family, must never die. Some things you just don't tamper with!
I grew up with Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley and would have thought this would have been much more interesting. I was pretty bored. The numerous chapters on her childhood were not that interesting, and I ended up starting to skip chapters looking for the "good stuff" such as the Laverne and Shirley heydays. Even that wasn't very interesting. I finally gave up on the book.
The narrator was pretty good, but spoke in an English accent (or maybe supposed to be Irish) which was not something I'm used to so I don't know if that contributed to the fact that I just couldn't get into the book. I quit on it after several chapters.
So I waited for this story to get interesting and become a thriller and it just didn't happen....I listened to like 17 out of 47 chapters and finally got tired of waiting. Maybe it becomes a thriller after that...but I got tired of waiting and stopped listening.
I thought the reader did a great job, he used different voices and really made the story come alive. Too bad the story was so bad. I think what really drove me nuts was that every single character seemed like a caricature or stereotype. The stripper with a heart of gold, the tough but big-hearted detective, the evil personified ex-husband, the devious and vain fixer, the shady lawyer, and particularly the sex-crazed hypocritical politician. I suppose that could make it a satire, but it didn't make a very good story, and the story seemed to go on forever and ever.
I thought this was pretty boring. I got through about an hour of it. Then I got restless waiting for something interesting to happen, and went and looked at the synopsis of the book online to see if I had anything to look forward to, and it looked pretty bizarre and didn't seem like it would get much better, so I gave up on it.
This is the only book I've listened to in the series, and probably the only one I will. I thought it was funny, I laughed out loud a lot, a good story, and the narrator was great, really made the book. Not necessary to listen to other books in the series to enjoy this one.
I got this because it was free and because I really enjoyed this same author's "Driving Mr. Dead." I quickly got bored with it because it took way too long introducing seemingly every character from every other book in the series ever written and not getting to the actual plot. It might have been enjoyable had I read all the other books and knew the characters. But it's too short of a story to spend so much time getting all those other characters into the picture before starting the actual plot of the book. I didn't finish it, maybe got through the first 20 minutes.
The story was just okay...I may have liked it more with a different reader. This narrator read VERY slowly with long pauses. I listened to it sped up 2x which made it seem kind of choppy but at least it wasn't so slow.
