I feel so fortunate to have listened to Anna's words. She reminded me of much that I have done well and badly over the years, how far we've come, and more. I loved hearing about her family and her push push. The book was like listening to a friend re-tell the story of where we have all been in this life journey. Plus... she's funny.
This reads like a teen's perception of life and love. Real people do learn to build a better life after tragedy. This is an immature look at how things work out (or fail to) . Any survivor could have written their story better than this. Terrible -- missed opportunity. Lack of any research on life after loss. Maybe this is only "a wanna-be- fire fighter's book."
I felt that the characters were getting all jumbled. We had police, lovers, spies, and all. I listened to the end but I was disappointed.
This story hasn't left me. I took the characters as my own. Loved the book.
Loved the story. The characters are distinct and memorable. There's a hopeful sub-layer that causes the reader to suspend judgment; young people make bad choices but they mature.
A good story. Memorable characters. The story did not follow a predictable pattern. It was the story of a family... never predictable.
It is an important story, but lessened by the choice of a western sounding voice to tell the story.
The author, herself, or someone sounding like the author should have put the story into the minds of the listener.
The re-telling of this story made me thank the people of the churches in the Boston area who brought Cambodian refugees to the USA in the 1980's from refugee camps in Thailand. I met the refugees there, I- a new teacher of English as a second language, and they- the hurt and hopeful immigrants. They told me these stories first-hand. They changed my life and changed my opinion my own countrymen. God bless them all.
The escape attempts from the work camps and the rules against having unauthorized food (found eggs, etc.) are other stories of bravery that should be told. Perhaps other Cambodians would please fill in the blanks from your experience or from the experiences of your parents.
too many to list
no, I don't think so
It is Inspirational to me because I am the same age as the character. He is remembering his good and bad days, he's walking, and trying to do something about his life, even in these later times. All listeners, young and old, can take this story as a reminder of what's really important in life.
Memorable stories and good advice. A living example of courage.
You will be impressed with Stephenson's determination to solve problems.
This was a wonderful, informative story, but I would prefer the story without the recipes the writer included.. ok, maybe one recipe would be ok if there was a point.. but this technique was very distracting... I suggest you listen to the story and skip through the recipes.
