I enjoy authentic characters, in believable circumstances, mostly fiction, blended with historical fact, of any genre, with romance added.

  • The Abominable: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (29 hrs and 41 mins)
    • By Dan Simmons
    • Narrated By Kevin T. Collins

The year is 1924 and the race to summit the world's highest mountain has been brought to a terrified pause by the shocking disappearance of George Mallory and Sandy Irvine, high on the shoulder of Mt. Everest. By the following year, three climbers - a British poet and veteran of the Great War, a young French Chamonix guide, and an idealistic young American - find a way to take their shot at the top.

Marci says: "Great story, great detail"
    "Wonderful Journey"
If you could sum up The Abominable in three words, what would they be?

    Wonderful historical reinvention

What other book might you compare The Abominable to and why?

Into Thin Air - A similar venture into the Mt Everest imagination

Have you listened to any of Kevin T. Collins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No. Excellent performance.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes. The perspective of it being told by someone that has passed away and wrote their story to be passed on to the author.

    Any additional comments?

Brought tears to my eyes. Loved listening during my long commutes.

  • Notorious: A Max Revere Novel, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 51 mins)
    • By Allison Brennan
    • Narrated By Eliza Foss
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

New York Times best-selling author Allison Brennan introduces an irrepressible heroine in her pulse-pounding new thriller Notorious, which Lisa Gardner says is, "Guaranteed to keep you up late at night."Maxine Revere has dedicated her life to investigating murders that the police have long since given up any hope of solving.

Felicia The Geeky Blogger says: "Good Start to a new series"
    "Average Reading"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

For me as a male reader it read like a book for a woman, written by a woman, read by a woman, about women. I can be in touch with my "feminine side" same as most males but it felt to "girly" for me.

Would you be willing to try another book from Allison Brennan? Why or why not?

Probably not. I usually dont return to authors of a book I "endured" to finish.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I'm not sure if a male performer would have given me the balance of male/female that I needed.

Could you see Notorious being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

  • The Martian

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 53 mins)
    • By Andy Weir
    • Narrated By R. C. Bray
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?"

Michael G. Kurilla says: "Macgyver on Mars"
    "MacGyver on Mars"
What made the experience of listening to The Martian the most enjoyable?

The protagonist, Mark Watney's positive attitude of never giving up, having a sense of humor in the most adverse circumstances, and always approaching each day with purpose.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Martian?

When earth discovered he was alive by observing a photograph of the site by satelite.

What about R. C. Bray’s performance did you like?

    R. C. Bray was Mark Watney!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. It made me wished my commute was an 8 hour drive instead of 2 hours.

    Any additional comments?

Astounding detailed descriptions of science without boring me and making me want to put the book down. Not easy to do since I'm not that interested in science but I love cheering for a good character hero struggling to survive and doing it cheerfully!!

  • Suspect

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Robert Crais
    • Narrated By MacLeod Andrews
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner. Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s. They are each other’s last chance.

    Jacqueline says: "Gripping Page Turner!!"
"For dog lovers, romatics, police, or military"
Would you consider the audio edition of Suspect to be better than the print version?

I would believe that I would have been equally satisfied.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Suspect?

    The relationships lost, then transformed.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The scenes where the relationships were lost at the beginning.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Looked forward to my commute so that I could listen.

    Any additional comments?

Brought tears to my eyes! I love when I can invest emotionally in a story and identify with authentic charecters regardless of race or species!

  • Never Go Back: A Jack Reacher Novel, Book 18

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 43 mins)
    • By Lee Child
    • Narrated By Dick Hill
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had. Reacher is there to meet - in person - the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone. But it isn’t Turner behind the CO’s desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about.

    Marci says: "Expect the Best"
    "Best Jack Reacher"
Would you listen to Never Go Back again? Why?

Maybe, but not soon. I invest emotionally in a good story. That takes a full tank that is empty at the end. I fill back up with looking forward to my next investment.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. Jack Reacher never lets you sit back in your seat. I dont want to.

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It took a long time to accept Dick Hill's presentation. I struggled through the first 1/3 of the book but I hung in there.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I love Jack Reacher. I can relate to who he is and why. For that reason, I would find it hard to react emotionally or expect him to change. He does not emote. I understand, so neither do I as I read.

    Any additional comments?

I have read all of the Jack Reacher series and have not been disappointed. They are all 4 to 5 star. This was easily 5.
