When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Casual Vacancy to be better than the print version?

Yes. It was very nice to listen to the book in the English accent. I think it added something to the story that a print book would not have given.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

All of the characters in the book.

Have you listened to any of Tom Hollander’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first Tom Hollander's performance. I thought he did an excellent job with the bok.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The lives of a small town

    Any additional comments?

Overall I though the narrator did a great job. At the beginning of the book, I felt like there were way too many characters to follow but it was masterfully how Rowling linked the lives of all of the characters together. The storry is a sad and a little dark.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

Would you listen to Gone Girl again? Why?

My favorite part of this book was being able to hear the thought process of both of the main characters in this book. Most books you read you only get to hear one side of the story.
