Kirk Douglas is a born storyteller, and in this engrossing memoir, he offers wonderful tales, favorite jokes, and hard-won insights. As he explores the mixed blessings of growing older, he looks back at his youth and his glamorous life in Hollywood. He tells delightful stories of the making of such films as Spartacus and includes anecdotes about such friends as Frank Sinatra, Lauren Bacall, Ronald Reagan, Fred Astaire, John Wayne, and Johnny Cash.

    "Meandering and boring."
    Overall

This book is a series of meandering musings and random memories. They are not even told in an entertaining way. I tried to tough it out and even skipped ahead in hopes that it would get better. Kirk Douglas is a great actor but did not hold my interest as an author.

  • The Kid Stays in the Picture

The Kid Stays in the Picture by Hollywood giant and legendary "bad boy" Robert Evans is an intimate and fascinating account of his rise, fall, and rise again in show business. The only actor to ever run a studio, Evans took Paramount from the basement to the penthouse with such movies as The Odd Couple, Rosemary's Baby, Love Story, The Godfather, and Chinatown. An extraordinary recounter, Evans spares no one, least of all himself.

    Overall

The narrators voice was so gravely as to be painful to listen to. I had a hard time understanding him and being able to focus on the story. He definitely is not a good story teller as he spends little time developing his stories. This book is mostly a series of short paragraphs. I didn't finish it and I finish most of the books I listen to.

When Barbara Kingsolver and her family move from suburban Arizona to rural Appalachia, they take on a new challenge: to spend a year on a locally-produced diet, paying close attention to the provenance of all they consume. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle follows the family through the first year of their experiment.

    "soapbox journalism"
    Overall

Being a gardener and back to basics advocate I expected this to be an entertaining listen. I had a hard time finishing it. The authors come off as smug and superior. The narration sounds as if read by a school child giving a report in front of the class. They have some good points but are presented with a very condescending tone.
