Twice Claire has used an ancient stone circle to travel back to the 18th century. The first time she found love with a Scottish warrior but had to return to the 1940s to save their unborn child. The second time, 20 years later, she reunited with her lost love but had to leave behind the daughter that he would never see. Now Brianna, from her 1960s vantage point, has found a disturbing obituary and will risk everything in an attempt to change history.

    Overall

I like the series, but this is the first time i have listened to a book in a long time that i truly wished it was abridged. The book is littered with so may gratiutous sex scenes that it makes you wonder who the author is trying to write to. In sum, not as good as the previous books, but still worthwhile if you have lots of time to kill.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The story is interesting, but the writing is about 7th grade level with a urge to impress. Much of the diologue is forced and predictable. It pains me to read a book so sophmorically written. For one example, the author describles the main villian (a diminitive korean woman that grew up entirely in a labor camp) as being able to speak flawless English and never to have lost a martital arts fight to even two men. It was comically painful. If you hate poor writing skip it!

Internationally best-selling novelist and American icon Tom Robbins delivers the long-awaited tale of his wild life and times, both at home and around the globe. The grandchild of Baptist preachers, Robbins would become over the course of half a century a poet-interruptus, an air force weatherman, a radio DJ, an art-critic-turned-psychedelic-journeyman, a world-famous novelist, and a counter-culture hero, leading a life as unlikely, magical, and bizarre as those of his quixotic characters.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I have read most of Tom's books and found them quite enjoyable. I really wanted to enjoy this book and learn about him, but I could only make it half way through. The book does shed some light on were TB got his inspiration, but is simply not entertaining. Sorry.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Celebrated crime master and two-time Edgar Award winner James Lee Burke returns with a gorgeously crafted, brutally resonant chronicle of violence along the Texas-Mexico border. Sheriff Hackberry Holland patrols a small Southwest Texas border town, meting out punishment and delivering justice in his small square of this magnificent but lawless land. When an alcoholic ex-boxer named Danny Boy Lorca begs to be locked up after witnessing a man tortured to death by a group of bandits, Hack and his deputy, Pam Tibbs, slowly extract the Indian man’s gruesome tale.

Let me start by saying I am a fan. However, this story is so unbelievable that it is tough to take seriously. There are literally three sets of well organized killing teams (russians, mexicans, and religious freaks, as well as the FBI of course) stuck in a small town trying to kill each other at various points to get at one guy who has plans for a predator drone. At various times these "gangs" try to help the police to catch each other kill. It is simply overkill and not remotely believable. Also, while i like the way Burke writes, half of the conversations between the characters end by statement like "don't make fun of me or else type lines". The characters are also overly analitical no matter how dumb they are supposed to be. Burke definitely has better books.

What disappointed you about State of Wonder?

The story was just not compelling. The writing is below average. If you like this author, I suppose it may worthwhile. Just boring and seems like it was written to attract middle age women.

Would you ever listen to anything by Ann Patchett again?

I have before, but she just is not a great writer.

You didn???t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It is just ok for the writer's fans. Completely overrated.

This mesmerizing first novel tells the epic journey of Lin, an escaped convict who flees maximum security prison in Australia to disappear into the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The keys to unlock the mysteries that bind Lin are held by two people: his mentor Khader Khan, mafia godfather and criminal-philosopher; and the beautiful, elusive Karla, whose passions are driven by dangerous secrets.

"There should be an edited version"
    Overall

Look, this is obviously a very talented author and the narrator does a very good job. The problem is that the author continually repeats himself in story after story. How many times do we have to hear about the main character's knife fighting ability. He tries to make the character move from a helpless drug addict to Mother Theresa and back and forth. Much of the writing is just over done. For instance, the main character goes to prison and he suppossedly was beaten for 4 hours about the genitals and face, then another 4 hours by a different group of guards, and then another 4 hours by the first group of guard who supposidly got too tired from beating him. Of course, this left no permanent physical damage. The author tries to make the main character likeable by making him humble. It works the first 10 times or so. Bottom line -- this is a good book and worthwhile but buy the abridged version if there is one.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Why we think it’s a great listen: How do you one-up a book that’s already a global literary phenomenon? Hire Simon Vance to (flawlessly) interpret the loves, lives, and murders of Sweden’s cold and secret-filled world. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden.
