  • Stein on Writing: A Master Editor Shares His Craft, Techniques, and Strategies

Stein on Writing provides immediately useful advice for writers of fiction and nonfiction, whether newcomers or accomplished professionals. As Sol Stein, renowned editor, author, and instructor, explains, "This is not a book of theory. It is a book of usable solutions, how to fix writing that is flawed, how to improve writing that is good, how to create interesting writing in the first place."

ddsharper says: "Excellent Content and Listen"
    "Arrogant but informative"
    Overall

Stein incredibly arrogant. He tells us we should read John Grisham’s “The Firm” for an example of poor writing. Good writers on the other hand notice little things like the sexual interplay between fathers and their adolescent daughters, mothers and adolescent sons at square dances. If you can ignore his self-serving and sometimes ludicrous comments like the one about square dances, the book has some excellent information for aspiring writers.

Autumn 1942. Hitler's legions have swept across Europe; France has fallen; Churchill and the English stand isolated on their island. In North Africa, Rommel and his Panzers have routed the British Eighth Army and stand poised to overrun Egypt, Suez, and the oil fields of the Middle East.

I had read some things about Rommel before, including that the allies had targeted him. This book goes into detail and is based on accounts from the men who were there. I learned many new things about this aspect of WWII through this exciting narrative. I was listening with my earbuds in at the gym, and I said out loud, "No way!" during one particularly exciting part when the characters found themselves in the German's line. Someone later asked what the heck I was listening to. Audible gained a new customer.

Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack is a letter addressed to Harold from a woman he hasn't seen or heard from in 20 years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye. Harold pens a quick reply and, leaving Maureen to her chores, heads to the corner mailbox. But then Harold has a chance encounter, one that convinces him that he absolutely must deliver his message to Queenie in person.

This is not the type of book I normally listen to, but the description intrigued me. I was not disappointed. Harold is a quirky, but lovable character and the narrator does an excellent job of bringing him to life. I also enjoyed the wide range of other characters he encounters on his pilgrimage. The best thing about this book is that you begin to examine your own life and relationships just as Harold examines his. His emotional journey is as compelling as his physical journey, and you will enjoy traveling with him through both.

Why we think it’s a great listen: It’s easy to say that when it comes to sci-fi you either love it or you hate it. But with Ender’s Game, it seems to be you either love it or you love it.... The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Enter Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, the result of decades of genetic experimentation.

I got this book because my high schooler was assigned to read it, and I wanted to be able to discuss it with her. I was hooked immediately. I see why it was assigned; you could teach an entire semester leadership course based on this book. You have to suspend your notion of the maturity and intelligence of kids that are the age of these characters, but once you do you will have fun with this book. I see the movie version is coming out. If it is as good as this book it will be a blockbuster. My daughter and I had some good conversations about the book, which also made it well worth the read.

The powerful debut novel from Alan Brennert, Moloka’i tells the story of Rachel Kalama, a seven-year-old Hawaiian girl who contracts leprosy and is quarantined on the island of Moloka’i during the 1890s. Separated from her family and forced to grow up in the leper colony of Kalaupapa, Rachel experiences intense isolation. But she remains strong, finding moments of joy, and even love. Rich in Hawaiian history, this novel proves itself a stellar piece of historical fiction.

I enjoyed the flow of this book very much. I usually only listen to books for an hour or two at a time. I listened to this book on a 6 hour drive with few breaks. The main character is very real and she becomes someone you care about as the story progresses. I am not an emotional guy at all, but I had a lump in my throat at the end of this one. Noelani is not a narrator I have heard before even though I am a long time Audible listener. She was wonderful and her accent gave the story authenticity. This book is one of my all time favorites now. This book will not disappoint you!

In 1991, acting on a tip from a local fisherman, two scuba divers discovered a sunken German U-boat, complete with its crew of 60 men, not too far off the New Jersey coast. The divers, realizing the momentousness of their discovery, began probing the mystery. Over the next six years, they became expert and well-traveled researchers, taught themselves German, hunted for clues in Germany, and constructed theories corrective of the history books, all in an effort to identify this sunken U-boat and its crew.

I listen to books while driving and working out. With this book, I found myself sitting in the driveway not wanting to stop listening! This book is very well written and researched. I really enjoyed the interview with the divers at the end of the book. Make sure you listen to past the author's end notes to get to the interview - it is well worth it. Also, Michael Pritchard did a great job narrating this book.

The dusty files of a venerable dictionary publisher, a hidden cache of coded clues, a story written by a phantom author, an unsolved murder in a gritty urban park: all collide memorably in Emily Arsenault's magnificent debut, at once a teasing literary puzzle, an ingenious suspense novel, and an exploration of definitions: of words, of who we are, and of the stories we choose to define us.

Ed says: "Enjoyable Book with Great Characters"
    "Don't Waste Your Time"
    Overall

I listened to this book through part 1, then deleted it. The characters were not interesting, the teaser about word-lovers enjoying this book did not deliver, and the plot is VERY slow to develop. It was a waste of the 6 hours or so I spent on it.
