What did you love best about Horror Stories?

You have to read/listen to Shapeshifters Anonymous. It was campy and silly and marvelous! I laughed out loud and I loved the ending. I'm going to go online and research the long lost 'Book of Bob'.

    Any additional comments?

Jack Kilborn is to horror what Seth MacFarlane is to comedy. His writing is entertaining and he pushes the boundaries to the point of discomfort. Sometimes he crosses the line of decency. Sometimes I am disturbed by the subject matter. But I can't put it down. I HAVE to know how the story ends. He's just that good.

When linguist Andrew Dennison is yanked from his bed by the Secret Service and taken to a top secret facility in the desert, he has no idea he’s been brought there to translate the words of an ancient demon. He joins pretty but cold veterinarian Sun Jones, eccentric molecular biologist Dr. Frank Belgium, and a hodge-podge of religious, military, and science personnel to try and figure out if the creature is, indeed, Satan. But things quickly go bad, and very soon Andy isn’t just fighting for his life, but the lives of everyone on earth.

Would you listen to Origin again? Why?

Regardless of your take on Judeo-Christian beliefs, this is a great roller coaster ride. I would have classified it as horror, but technothriller is also pretty accurate. Gets a little bit intense in some places - not for the squeamish. Thanks, Jack. Well done.

What did you like best about this story?

It's a man vs. monster story, rather than a man vs. crazy person(s) story.

What about Luke Daniels’s performance did you like?

I liked the way he portrayed Bub.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

If the devil exists, does that prove the existence of God?

It was supposed to be a harmless camping trip. Six wayward teenagers who'd run into trouble with the law, and their court-appointed guardians, Sara and Martin Randhurst. Three nights on a small, deserted island off of Michigan's upper peninsula. A time to bond, to learn, to heal. Then Martin told a campfire story about the island's history. Of the old civil war prison hidden in there, and the starving confederate soldiers who resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. Everyone thought it was funny. They even laughed when Martin pretended to be dragged off into the woods.

    Annie says: "Gore-fest!"
"Classic Jack Kilborn, but more gross than horror."

Would you try another book from Jack Kilborn and J. A. Konrath and/or Phil Gigante?

Yes, but I will be more discerning about the subject matter. I want to consider reading everything Jack Kilborn writes because I know he can and has done better than this story.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting thing about the story is the lengths the author will go to in trying to horrify me. There was an abundance of horror, much of it carried a step or two beyond what I would have expected.

Unfortunately the least interesting thing about the book is dwelling on the idea of how horrible humans can be to one another - not my idea of a worthy topic for a novel.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably not, for the same reason I do not go see other insane killer movies.

    Any additional comments?

You can do better than this, Jack. I've read a lot of your stories. I know you're really talented. And I want more from you than 'insane killers go berserk'.

In these haunting, suspenseful stories, lost, fragile, searching characters wander between ordinary life and a psychological shadowland. They have experienced intense love or loss, grief or loneliness, displacement or disconnection - and find themselves in unexpected, dire, and sometimes unfathomable situations.

Would you try another book from Dan Chaon and/or Kirby Heyborne?

Perhaps, if I had nothing else to try, but probably not.

What could Dan Chaon have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

These stories seemed to go nowhere. They lack resolution and closure. I couldn't tell when the story was over.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Narration was good. I have no complaints with that.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

disappointment. The story ideas presented had real potential, but didn't reach it.
