  • The Book of Joe

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 58 mins)
    • By Jonathan Tropper
    • Narrated By Scott Brick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Joe Goffman was fifteen years out from his sleepy hometown when he wrote Bush Falls, a searing critique of its people and institutions. The book was a runaway best seller, and led to an even more successful movie. Now, however, Joe's got a problem. His father has suffered a stroke, and that means that Joe has to go back to his birthplace after having successfully antagonized every person living there. Can Joe survive the reservoirs of hatred that have been waiting to pour down upon him? Just maybe.

Jannice says: "Glad I took a chance"
"Wonderful read! Don't pass it by!"

Couldn't put it down--characters you care about--beautifully written--hilarious and sad. It is at the top of my list of reccommended books.

  • Straight Man

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 6 mins)
    • By Richard Russo
    • Narrated By Sam Freed
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Russo's protagonist is William Henry Devereaux, Jr., the reluctant chairman of the English department of a badly underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt. In the course of a single week, Devereaux will have his nose mangled by an angry colleague, imagine his wife is having an affair with his dean, wonder if a curvaceous adjunct is trying to seduce him with peach pits, and threaten to execute a goose on local television.

Jeffrey A. Sherman says: "Shockingly good"
    "Great fun--give this a try!"

Hilarious satire combined with warm sympathetic characters. The satire is funny but never cruel--difficult balance to maintain but Russo pulls it off. Delicious send-up of pompous college administrators and members of the college English department. Even when Russo is at his satiric best, almost all of the characters, though flawed, are presented as sympathetic complex human beings. I laughed alot--sometimes so hard that I had to stop listening. All in all, a wonderfully entertaining, intelligent and humane book--highly recommend.

  • Cold Service

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 47 mins)
    • By Robert B. Parker
    • Narrated By Joe Mantegna
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When Spenser's closest ally, Hawk, is brutally injured and left for dead while protecting bookie Luther Gillespie, Spenser embarks on an epic journey to rehabilitate his friend in body and soul. Hawk, always proud, has never been dependent on anyone. Now he is forced to make connections: to the medical technology that will ensure his physical recovery, and to reinforce the tenuous emotional ties he has to those around him.

Dan says: "Parody of Parker--Pass it by!"
    "Parody of Parker--Pass it by!"

Reads like a bad parody of Robert Parker--and this is coming from a Robert Parker fan. Instead try "All our Yesterdays" and "Early Autumn"--two of Parker's earlier (and much better) books.

    • By Andre Dubus III
    • Narrated By Andre Dubus III, Fontaine Dollas Dubus
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Kathy Nicolo is a troubled young woman whose house is all she has left, and who refuses to let her hard-won stability slip away from her. Lisa says: "Astounding characterizations, and wonderfully read"

This book has everything--terrific writing, characters and suspense. Couldn't stop listening--can't reccommend enough.

  • The Nanny Diaries

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 2 mins)
    • By Emma McLaughlin, Nicola Kraus
    • Narrated By Kathe Mazur
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

What do you do when you are a nanny to an obscenely rich Park Avenue matron named X? Mrs. X refuses to do anything for herself, including cook, clean, or take care of her 4-year-old son. You are expected to do everything, including maintaining the mental health of said 4-year-old, even while Mrs. X decides that it is time for a divorce. You'll have to bear up under the strain with wit and panache, even as the boundaries between your working life and your so-called private life blur, merge, and disappear.

    Rhonda says: "The Nanny Diaries"
    "Funny and Engaging"

Give this a try if you're in the mood for good laughs and an intelligent, thoughtful and well-written novel. Excellent narration.

  • The Beach House

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By James Patterson, Peter de Jonge
    • Narrated By Gil Bellows
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Patterson's latest is "a slick, vastly enjoyable thriller." Jack Mullen's relentless crusade to discover the truth behind his younger brother's death puts him into a head-on collision with one of the most powerful and ruthless men in New York. As it unfolds that his brother was involved with some of the richest women and men in America - in ways Jack never imagined - his dream of justice fades. Only if he can somehow beat the rich at their own game will he be able to avenge his brother.

    B. Estes says: "Adventure and excitment"
    "Make another selection"

Plot & characters not believable, doesn't work even as a "beach book".

  • A Cold Heart

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By Jonathan Kellerman
    • Narrated By John Rubinstein
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Alex Delaware is summoned to a trendy gallery where a promising young artist has been brutally garroted on the night of her first major showing. There is no obvious motive, and the careful staging of the murder scene immediately suggests to Alex not an impulsive crime of passion, but the meticulous and taunting modus operandi of a serial killer. As more killings are discovered, unraveling the puzzle assumes a new importance - stopping a vicious psychopath who's made cold-blooded murder his chosen art form.

Rosie H says: "A Cold Heart"
    "Choose a different book"

What's always drawn me to Kellerman's books are first his characters' relationships and second the mystery. This book disappointed on both fronts.
