  • Semper Fi: Book One in The Corps Series

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 15 mins)
    • By W. E. B. Griffin
    • Narrated By Dick Hill
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

From Shanghai to Wake Island, the Corps was America’s first line of defense as the winds of war exploded into the devastating surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. This is the story of the men of the Marine Corps, their loves and loyalties, an elite fraternity united by courage and honor, as they steel themselves for battle, prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice....

Aser Tolentino says: "At Last, This Colorful War Story is on Audible"
    "Author is a religious bigot!"
What would have made Semper Fi better?

I really wanted to like this book. Having been in the military and having read all the glowing reviews, I was looking forward to a great read. There are great characters in the book and great action and the writing is good, but he so often expresses such a virulent hatred for anyone that has religious beliefs and he gets on his stump about it way too much. Bigotry in any form is ugly and at times the author's ugliness made me want to puke.

Would you ever listen to anything by W. E. B. Griffin again?

What three words best describe Dick Hill’s voice?

    Versatile. Interesting. Skilled

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

The author's barely disguised hatred makes me sad.

  • The List

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 29 mins)
    • By J. A. Konrath
    • Narrated By Benjamin L. Darcie
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The List is a technothriller about a group of people who each have tattoos of numbers on the bottoms their feet, and don't know why. One of them, a Chicago Homicide cop named Tom Mankowski, has had one of these strange tattoos since birth. When he investigates a violent murder and discovers the victim also has a tattooed number, it sets the ball rolling for an adventure of historic proportions. To say more would give away too much.

    Chris says: "Great Listen!"
    "Just OK"
Would you try another book from J. A. Konrath and/or Benjamin L. Darcie?

Probably won't buy another Konrath...too many other good authors out there.

Would you recommend The List to your friends? Why or why not?

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Performance was Ok. Character voices ok; but have definitely heard better.

Do you think The List needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Nah. Didn't really find it that interesting or entertaining.

    Any additional comments?

The action was often too unbelievable. The good guys slipped maybe 30-50 attempts at their lives... I lost count. The killers were made out to be such deadly people but when it actually came to doing job they were morons. In the end it seemed a bit outlandish and trivial. At times the characters were likable; but other times the humor was forced and silly. The whole assassination attempt seemed pretty far-fetched and kind of tacked on. I would have like to seen more done with the idea of the cloned famous people; maybe groomed them as they were being raised and turned them into some kind of amazing team or something...don't know...not a writer but the idea was fascinating and he didn't really do that much with it. The idea was there through the whole book but not put to really good use.
