When the National Security Agency's invincible code-breaking machine encounters a mysterious code it cannot break, the agency calls its head cryptographer, Susan Fletcher, a brilliant, beautiful mathematician. What she uncovers sends shock waves through the corridors of power. The NSA is being held hostage...not by guns or bombs, but by a code so complex that if released would cripple U.S. intelligence.

Awful plot, awful writing, an incredible waste of time. After reading DiVinci, I expected much more from Brown. But, then again, I liked the DiVinci story but was unimpressed with the writing, so maybe I should have known.

Dave Robicheaux returns in another Bayou adventure, this one more gruesome and gut-wrenching than any that have come before. Hurricane Katrina has ravaged New Orleans, leaving the streets and buildings flooded and the city awash with opportunists, looters, and vicious criminals. There is no order, no law. Police are shooting randomly at innocent people, prison guards have abandoned their posts, and bodies float through the streets and hang from trees.

Never mind the story. It's great on its own, typical James Lee Burke and Dave Robicheaux. What really impressed me was Burke's writing about his beloved Louisiana, post Hurricane Katrina. I've not read many accounts of Katrina that have the poetry of language and heart that Burke has for the people and culture of New Orleans. That is what makes this story so wonderful to read.

Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. Now Eragon must travel to Ellesmera, land of the elves, for further training in the skills of the Dragon Rider: magic and swordsmanship. Soon he is on the journey of a lifetime, his eyes open to awe-inspiring new places and people, his days filled with fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and nothing is what it seems.

    "Disappointing."
    Overall

I really liked the first book. It wasn't great literature, but it was fun, adventurous, and showed promise. The second book, unfortunately, has very little excitement and adventure as Eragon spends most of his time in Rider training. The sub-story of Eragon's cousin is much better as it builds in intensity and reminds me of what I liked about the first book. Let's hope Book 3 is more like Book 1.
