  • Dancer

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 18 mins)
    • By Colum McCann
    • Narrated By Jonathan Davis, Nick Pauling, Jessica Almasy, and others
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Dancer is the erotically charged story of the Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev as told through the cast of those who knew him: there is Anna Vasileva, Rudi's first ballet teacher, who rescues her protege from the stunted life of his provincial town; Yulia, whose sexual and artistic ambitions are thwarted by her Soviet-sanctioned marriage; and Victor, the Venezuelan street hustler, who reveals the lurid underside of the gay celebrity set.

Chrissie says: "Amazing prose and narration"
"I wanted to like it so much"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I really, really found the constant changing of readers annoying and disconcerting.

Would you recommend Dancer to your friends? Why or why not?

Would not recommend. I made it half way through before giving up and most of that on will power alone.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

The book itself is somewhat disingenuous in that I thought it was a fictionalized biography of an interesting historical character. Turns out to have little of him in it and a lot (LOT) of drivel about his family, friends, the state of Russia that he grew up in - he is a peripheral character in most of it.

  • Pacific Glory

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 2 mins)
    • By P. T. Deutermann
    • Narrated By Dick Hill
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Marsh Vincent, Mick McCarty, and Tommy Lewis were inseparable friends during their naval academy years, each man in love with the beautiful, unattainable Glory Hawthorne. Only Tommy wins her heart and marries Glory after graduation. Different skills set the three men on separate paths in the Navy, but they are all forever changed by the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941.

Glory, now Tommy’s widow, is a tough Navy nurse still grieving her loss while trying to save lives at the Pearl Harbor naval hospital.

    Hill says: "A real hit"
"Great author, put off by narrator"
Would you try another book from P. T. Deutermann and/or Dick Hill?

Have been reading P. T. Deutermann for years with much enjoyment. After trying this audible I found myself listening to the second half of the recording through sheer willpower. The narrator has one, East Coast tough guy voice for all charactors under all circumstances. I'll continue to read Deutermann but on my Kindle in the future.

  • The Affair: A Jack Reacher Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 3 mins)
    • By Lee Child
    • Narrated By Dick Hill
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Everything starts somewhere. For elite military cop Jack Reacher, that somewhere was Carter Crossing, Mississippi, way back in 1997. A young woman is dead, and solid evidence points to a soldier at a nearby military base. But that soldier has powerful friends in Washington. Reacher is ordered undercover - to find out everything he can, to control the local police, and then to vanish. Reacher is a good soldier. But when he gets to Carter Crossing, he finds layers no one saw coming, and the investigation spins out of control. Local sheriff Elizabeth Deveraux has a thirst for justice - and an appetite for secrets.

Susan says: "Better than previous Reacher adventures"
    "Buy the paper version"

Having been a long term devoted Jack Reacher fan we looked forward to this new audible book. Sad to say the reader is one of the worst we've heard and absolutely trashes the book with a pseudo-East Coast tough guy accent that is both inappropriate to the character and almost painfully bad to listen to. Skip the audible version!

  • Where the God of Love Hangs Out

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 12 mins)
    • By Amy Bloom
    • Narrated By Susan Ericksen
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In this sensuous, funny, and heartbreaking new book, Amy Bloom explores the unexpected patterns that all forms of love and loss weave into our lives. With her dazzling prose, strong voice, and unmistakable and generous wit, this award-winning author takes us to the margins and centers of real people's lives, introducing us to some of her most unforgettable characters yet.

Zella Bea says: "It's Not Where You Think"
    "Quite Dreadful"

Pretentious, self-absorbed, unrealistic, but no point in going on. They sucked me in, but don't waste your money on it.

  • Shadow and Light: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Jonathan Rabb
    • Narrated By Simon Prebble
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Berlin, between the two world wars. When an executive at the renowned Ufa film studios is found dead floating in his office bathtub, it falls to Nikolai Hoffner, a chief inspector in the Kriminalpolizei, to investigate. With the help of Fritz Lang (the German director) and Alby Pimm (leader of the most powerful crime syndicate in Berlin), Hoffner finds his case taking him beyond the world of film and into the far more treacherous landscape of Berlin's sex and drug trade.

    Buzz says: "Masterful"
    "Depressing book, reader mumbles"

The book is not "noir" - it is clinically depressing. Compound that with a reader who mumbles in a fuzzy British accent. I listen while driving and with the volume up to painful levels could follow about half the book's text. I am an avid audiobook fan and lasted for one hour into this one on sheer willpower. Avoid it!

  • A Hymn Before Battle: Legacy of the Aldenata

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 32 mins)
    • By John Ringo
    • Narrated By Marc Vietor
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

With Earth in the path of the rapacious Posleen, the Galactic Federation offers help to the backward humans - for a price. You can protect yourself from your enemies, but God save you from your allies!

Dr. Daniel Chapman says: "Another heads up!"
    "Over-written dreck"

Good reader couldn't save this over-written prose, cardboard characters and some of the most ridiculously inaccurate sterotyped military "culture" I've seen in a good while.

  • Weapons of Choice: Axis of Time, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (20 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By John Birmingham
    • Narrated By Jay Snyder
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

History is rewritten in an instant as the future smashes into the past, and high-tech hardware goes head to head with World War Two technology. In the chaos that ensues, thousands are killed, but the maelstrom has only just begun. The veterans of Pearl Harbor have never seen a helicopter, or a cruise missile - let alone nanotechnology, ceramic bullets, and F22 Raptor stealth jetfighters. Allied and Axis forces are then caught in a desperate struggle to gain the upper hand.

The Zombie Specialist says: "Great... addicted to another loooooong series!"
    "Tedious plot development, worse reader"

Fairly poorly done sci-fi, but what really kills it is the tedious enuciate - each - word - painfully - laboriously reader. Worse, the gent doesn't even pronounce nautical terms correctly!! I list to a LOT of audiobooks but couldn't make it through this one!

  • Up Till Now: The Autobiography

    • ABRIDGED (6 hrs and 12 mins)
    • By William Shatner, David Fisher
    • Narrated By William Shatner

After almost 60 years as an actor, William Shatner has become one of the most beloved entertainers in the world. It seems that Shatner is everywhere, and he was recently elected to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame. In this touching and funny autobiography, he reveals the man behind his career, and explains how he's become the worldwide star and experienced actor he is today.

    William says: "Very enjoyable"
    "Needs a professional audiobook reader"

The story is actually more interesting that I expected but after one hour I gave up and deleted the book from my ipod. The variation in volume as Shatner reads his own book varied from 'way to loud to inaudible and ultimately drove me away.

  • The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 45 mins)
    • By Charlie Huston
    • Narrated By Paul Michael Garcia
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Webster Fillmore Goodhue has found temporary work as one of the mop-up crew for the Los Angeles County crime division. In other words, he cleans up grisly crime scenes for the cops. When the daughter of a recent Malibu suicide victim asks for his help cleaning up after her brother has gotten into a little trouble, every cell in Web's brain is telling him to turn her down. But she's very attractive, and before he knows it, he's well on his way to getting his face kicked in.

    Alan says: "Funny!"
    "What a disappointment"

The main character is a immature loser who stays that way through the whole book. Nothing profound, deep, or amusing, simply shallow self-indulgence. Couldn't care less of the protagonist lived or died. Kept hoping it would get better but gave up at 2/3 through - don't waste your money!
