Shoeless Joe, the soul-stirring novel on which the movie Field of Dreams is based, is more than just another baseball story. Kinsella captures the spiritual dimension that baseball represents for its most determined devotees in this tale of love and the power of dreams to make people come alive.

Would you try another book from W. P. Kinsella and/or Grover Gardner?

I really loved Field of Dreams - so I was interested in reading the book. I was hoping for a light, fun, summer read.

Instead, I found the author's writing style to be tedious, lengthy, and ridiculously over-descriptive.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The narrator's voice sounded a bit like a sports announcer - which might have been a nice touch for this story if the writing was different. Instead, I found the combination of the sports-announcer voice plus the long, drawn-out descriptions almost impossible to listen to. .. the story seemed to drag on and on and on. ...

At the age of 22, Jennifer Worth left her comfortable home to move into a convent and become a midwife in postwar London’s East End slums. The colorful characters she met while delivering babies all over London - from the plucky, warm-hearted nuns with whom she lived to the woman with 24 children who couldn't speak English to the prostitutes and dockers of the city’s seedier side - illuminate a fascinating time in history.

    Any additional comments?

A friend recommended this book based upon how much she enjoys the television series - I had never even heard of it, but it sounded interesting so I thought I would give it a try. Very interesting listen! Almost a documentary told through vignettes. .. a fascinating glimpse into the world of midwives working in London during the mid-20th century.

Oscar Wilde brings his enormous gifts for astute social observation and sparkling prose to The Picture of Dorian Gray, the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. This dandy, who remains forever unchanged---petulant, hedonistic, vain, and amoral---while a painting of him ages and grows increasingly hideous with the years, has been horrifying and enchanting readers for more than 100 years.

Daniel says: "Beautifully written, brilliantly read."

    Great story. Really enjoyed it.

What about Simon Prebble’s performance did you like?

The narrator was a good choice for this book. Very easy listen.
