In the century's darkest time, one man became the most unlikely of heroes. German-Catholic industrialist and Nazi Party member Oskar Schindler used his wealth and influence to save the lives of more than 1,300 Jews who would have otherwise died in the concentration camp at Plaszow. Here is the story on which Steven Spielberg based his powerful motion picture. If you like this, try Ursula Hegi's Stones from a River.

What did you love best about Schindler's List?

The panache and risks that Oscar Schindler took to save as many people as he could from the Nazi concentration camps. His bravado.

What did you like best about this story?

How wonderful a human spirit Oscar Schindler was and his contribution to saving lives, albeit small in comparison to the gross atrocities that occurred. He truly is a lion-heart for all that he risked and accomplished.

Which character – as performed by Ben Kingsley – was your favorite?

Oscar - because he is portrayed as a worthwhile human being who was not swayed by the propaganda machine. In essence, he risked his life for the Jewish community. He didn't have to do that, but his compassion for justice was strong.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Just made me sad that the world has to live with that event forever - may we never forget, and may we be ever on guard for it to ever happen again. I feel especially for all the

    Any additional comments?

Great film. Great book. This is the first time I have read a book after having seen the film but I was never disappointed.

Edith Hahn was an outspoken young woman in Vienna when the Gestapo forced her into a ghetto and then into a slave labor camp. When she returned home months later, she knew she would become a hunted woman, so she went underground.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Nazi Officer's Wife to be better than the print version?

    Have not read print version.

What did you like best about this story?

A biography of WWII seen through the eyes of a Jewish woman trying to survive by whatever means she could. Her story was enthralling, her resilience amazing,a great story about the human spirit and what it can endure in times of extreme hardship and always in the face of death.

What about Barbara Rosenblat’s performance did you like?

She portrayed the characters ably so that the reader could easily follow the thread of the story, regardless of what character she read.

Who was the most memorable character of The Nazi Officer's Wife and why?

Edith of course. Her will to survive is a lesson for all, should they be caught in circumstances as dire as the ones she had to endure. She is an amazing woman who exhibits all the traits of what I believe a true
