This book checks all of my boxes: Well-drawn passionate characters, intelligent writing, American history brought to life ---- paired with a superb narration that breathes life into it all !!! Overall effect is a breathtaking journey into the evolution of true love, family, and adaptation to the travails of real life.
In this sweeping novel, a weary "accidental" soldier returns home to his beloved family in the Post-Civil War North, and struggles to come to terms with his past, his present, and his future. His return causes ripples in the lives of all who love him, as he tries to fit back into this family, that has also adapted to changes during his absence.
I typically read over over 200 books per year, and while I will usually rate them, I rarely feel compelled to write a review. This book , however, is an extraordinary experience which is not to be missed. The author pens the human experience of personal growth with such skill, that the characters seem real. I feel that this novel could be a classic. You will care so much about the characters, that it becomes unputdownable ! Truly 5 stars and more. Well Worth your time and credit !!!
I doubt this book had an editorial review prior to publication. Not only was it seriously repetative, but the text was jarring due to historical inaccuracy. The character development was astoundingly silly.. A severely abused and traumatized heroine is the belle of the ball, ready for love, in the span of a few days, and the alpha male hero is ready for romance with the sensitive belle within minutes of bloody battle where his clothes are blood splattered from his victims' decapitations. Neh...... and the reader was breathlessly excited at every phrase: relieving a full bladder, got the same tonal value as a moment of true love realized...well maybe that was true !!!
Even on sale, this book is not worth the time it takes to listen.
Hunkie Highlander blended with Romance, Time -Travel ,and a well-crafted story line... performed by a very good narrator....I was in Audiobook Heaven !! I'm still smiling !! And I will re-read this one again :)
Time travel / fantasy is not my usual selection, so I'm glad I took a chance on this book. I will definitely listen to the next two books in the trilogy.
Enjoyable, well written Romance by Anne Stuart, but the narration of Xe Sands hit it out of the park. This is a real treat !! I hope Audible will continue this series, and especially with Xe Sands. I have already started looking for other works by the same narrator.
I listen to alot of Great Romance books on Audible.........but this production is why I LOVE Audiobooks.
The combination of a Lisa Kleypas novel / narration by Rosalyn Landor is always a very special treat, yet this novel ranks as one of my all time favorites-- in any category. Although it is the third book in the four part Wallflower Series, it can stand alone.
Kleypas's characters are warmly drawn, and come alive in Ms.Landor's performance. Evie and Sabastian are so memorable, and real, you will miss them when the book finishes. Just the right amount of spice and heat, in an entertaining story. A little spicier than the first 2 books of the Wallflower series.
I think this book is a "Classic" in the Romance genre, and one of those delicious novels against which you will rank other books and authors. This is "the audiobook" in which you can lose yourself when you need a lovely escape.
This is not great literature, but the story line was well thought out and the author tied up all loose ends. As a Romance novel, it was entertaining, though a little tedious, and without much lasting value. Overall, the book seemed like a sophomore effort. I would not read this book over again, nor recommend it to a friend as a "must read." Still, it flowed well and shows talent, despite it's overly simple story line. The book covers the " lost together on a deserted island" theme, as well as can be expected. Sort of a "Fantasy island with survival hardships." Younger man falls for the older and experienced woman. Bottom line: It passed the time, but didn't stir the soul.
My most lasting impression was that the performer had an obnoxious voice and weird affect. I was glad when I finally finished the audio book and I could stop hearing her speak. I was happier still that I got the audiobook on a special sale. It's worth $4.99, but not more.
She is a good writer, but needs a deeper story line...I'd read her work again. She has the ability to write a great book.
Definitely could have been better.
