I am an avid "reader"- I prefer to listen to books rather than read them due to the added dimension added by the narrator.

  • The Alchemy of Air: A Jewish Genius, a Doomed Tycoon, and the Scientific Discovery That Fed the World but Fueled the Rise of Hitler

At the dawn of the 20th century, humanity was facing global disaster. Mass starvation, long predicted for the fast-growing population, was about to become a reality. A call went out to the worlds scientists to find a solution. This is the story of the two enormously gifted, fatally flawed men who found it: the brilliant, self-important Fritz Haber and the reclusive, alcoholic Carl Bosch. Together they discovered a way to make bread out of air, built city-sized factories, controlled world markets, and saved millions of lives.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Perhaps a scientist would have enjoyed this book more. Though there was some human interest in the book, there was also a lot of technical jargon especially in the first half of the book.

Would you be willing to try another book from Thomas Hager? Why or why not?

I think it would depend on the topic. I found Hager's writing somewhat mechanical overall.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator was dreadful. His voice reminded me of a robot most of the time and I found this only served to strengthen the mechanical nature of the book

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The story was interesting enough to keep me listening until the end. But it was painful in spots. I must admit that I found it interesting to see the details of how Hitler rose to power and reassured me that there were many anti-Nazi Germans at the time of Hitler's rise to power.

    Any additional comments?

I can't say I regret reading the book but it was a chore, which reading usually is not, for me.

When Hanna Bergstrom receives a lecture from her overprotective brother about neglecting her social life and burying herself in grad school, she's determined to tackle his implied assignment: get out, make friends, start dating. And who better to turn her into the sultry siren every man wants than her brother's gorgeous best friend, Will Sumner, venture capitalist and unapologetic playboy?

What I love about Christina Lauren's style is that she intersperses a real story line with sex.
The sex is very hot and the voice is wonderful, as provided by Grace Grant. I like the characters and how they are developed. I also like that Ms. Lauren has taken the three members of the threesome and developed a story surrounding each one of them and the ladies that they develop relationships with. Hannah is at times, almost a bit annoying in her naiveté. But I am sure that this is done to enhance the sex scenes between her and Will.
I really enjoyed this trilogy and will listen to all the books again for sure.

Tess, an aspiring seamstress, thinks she's had an incredibly lucky break when she is hired by famous designer Lady Lucile Duff Gordon to be a personal maid on the Titanic's doomed voyage. Once on board, Tess catches the eye of two men, one a roughly-hewn but kind sailor and the other an enigmatic Chicago millionaire. But on the fourth night, disaster strikes. Amidst the chaos and desperate urging of two very different suitors, Tess is one of the last people allowed on a lifeboat. Tess’s sailor also manages to survive unharmed, witness to Lady Duff Gordon’s questionable actions during the tragedy.

The title would never give away the fact that this novel surrounds the Titanic disaster, and the effect it has on numerous people, including the protagonist. There is a bit of romance thrown in, and the heroine has to choose between two suitors... one with money and one without, and she makes the right choice in the end. A good story but not great. It was not memorable particularly, but was an enjoyable read. Can't say I'd be running to recommend it though.

For fans of Fifty Shades of Grey and Bared to You comes the third novel in the erotic, fast-paced trilogy including Release Me and Claim Me. This sexy, emotionally charged romance continues the story of Damien Stark, the powerful multimillionaire who's never had to take "no" for an answer, and Nikki Fairchild, the Southern belle who only says "yes" on her own terms.

I didn't think I could find a series as "stimulating" as the Crossfire series but wow... this outdid it in my opinion. The ending is satisfying though there is some heartbreak thrown in for good measure. Not spoiling it.

Damien Stark’s need is palpable - his need for pleasure, his need for control, his need for me. Beautiful and brilliant yet tortured at his core, he is in every way my match. I have agreed to be his alone, and now I want him to be fully mine. I want us to possess each other beyond the sweetest edge of our ecstasy, into the deepest desires of our souls. To let the fire that burns between us consume us both. But there are dark places within Damien that not even our wildest passion can touch. I yearn to know his secrets, yearn for him to surrender to me as I have surrendered to him. But our troubled pasts will either bind us close...or shatter us completely.

This book fleshed out the relationship between Damien and Nikky, and there was a lot of suspense intertwined with the sex. As in the Crossfire series, Nikky doubts herself a lot during the books, and struggles with her urge to return to cutting herself, a practice she began after having grown up with an overly controlling and emotionally abusive mother. This is disturbing, but kept in check through the book. As Nikky becomes more sure of Damien's love for her, she is able to overcome this, except during the most stressful situations. Damien is able to understand her need for pain and provides her with outlets for it that are much healthier. I really like this couple.

He was the one man I couldn’t avoid. And the one man I couldn’t resist. Damien Stark could have his way with any woman. He was sexy, confident, and commanding: Anything he wanted, he got. And what he wanted was me. Our attraction was unmistakable, almost beyond control, but as much as I ached to be his, I feared the pressures of his demands. Submitting to Damien meant I had to bare the darkest truth about my past - and risk breaking us apart. But Damien was haunted, too. And as our passion came to obsess us both, his secrets threatened to destroy him - and us - forever.

The combination of the hot dialogue, fabulous narration by Sofia Willingham and numerous sexual fantasies and slightly kinky sex made for a very hot but enjoyable book. Other characters were also developed, and I was left wanting to listen to the other two books. Which I did. Wow.

Gideon Cross: As beautiful and flawless on the outside as he was damaged and tormented on the inside. He was a bright, scorching flame that singed me with the darkest of pleasures. I couldn’t stay away. I didn’t want to. He was my addiction…my every desire…mine. My past was as violent as his, and I was just as broken. We’d never work. It was too hard, too painful…except when it was perfect. Those moments when the driving hunger and desperate love were the most exquisite insanity. We were bound by our need. And our passion would take us beyond our limits to the sweetest, sharpest edge of obsession.…

This series was addictive. Really ramped up the juices! Eva and Gideon work out the kinks in their relationship as this second instalment in the Crossfire series continues. Eva and Gideon really are very well suited to one another...Eva just seems to miss that point on numerous occasions, letting her insecurities and fear of abandonment from her childhood influence her faith in Gideon's love and devotion to her. A great series.

The worldwide phenomenon continues as Eva and Gideon face the demons of their pasts and accept the consequences of their obsessive desires.... From the moment I first met Gideon Cross, I recognized something in him that I needed. Something I couldn’t resist. I also saw the dangerous and damaged soul inside - so much like my own. I was drawn to it. I needed him as surely as I needed my heart to beat. No one knows how much he risked for me. How much I’d been threatened, or just how dark and desperate the shadow of our pasts would become.

Things keep getting in the way of their happiness, and both of them have skeletons in their closets that rear their ugly heads on a regular basis. Anxious to see what happens in Captivated by you.

Well, this was my first foray into erotic fiction. It certainly was hot. I felt Ms. Redfield really nailed the voices of both Eva and Gideon which is not an easy task. This book set the scene for the remainder of the trilogy which followed this pair through numerous ups and downs, and showcased the damage that can be done to a soul from sexual abuse. Both the characters were developed in that light and this was interesting to see. Overall, very enjoyable.

Normally, I love JoJo Moyes' books and I have read several. This one just could not grab me. I kept reading the same passages over again, as my attention seemed to easily wander during listening. That is not typical of most of Ms. Moyes' books. In the end, I did not finish the book. Perhaps I shortchanged myself. I guess I will never know.

Amanda Lindhout reads her spectacularly dramatic memoir of a woman whose curiosity about the world led her from rural Canada to imperiled and dangerous countries on every continent, and then into 15 months of harrowing captivity in Somalia - a story of courage, resilience, and extraordinary grace. In August 2008, she traveled to Mogadishu, Somalia - "the most dangerous place on Earth." On her fourth day in the country, she and her photojournalist companion were abducted.

I found this book riveting. Ms. Lindhout did an excellent job of narrating her own work.
As a Canadian, I was able to relate to the geography referenced in the earlier part of the book. Her story was terrifying. I was baffled at why she would put herself in harm's way deliberately by going to such dangerous places, but I guess her wanderlust was too powerful to ignore. Her strength and determination while in captivity was awe inspiring. What a fabulous book.
