Mike Wingate had a rough childhood  —  he was abandoned at a playground at four years old and raised in foster care. No one ever came to claim him, and he has only a few, fragmented memories of his parents. Now, as an adult, Mike is finally living the life he had always wanted  —  he’s happily married to Annabel, the woman of his dreams; they have a precocious eight-year-old daughter, Kat.

This great book made such an impression on me that I've already started reading "The Survivor". The characters are beautifully developed and the story pulls you along on a tight thread of suspense, mystery and emotion. The story was complex and unexpected....I can see why it was recommended by David Baldacci.

Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

Oh please tell me there will be more from Inspector Gamache..I loved this series so much. Finding a new author to get hooked on is a challenge.

Lots of questions answered here and Gamache is a lot more vulnerable in this book...
    A very satisfying 10th book.

Nate Overbay, a former soldier suffering from PTSD and ALS, goes to an 11th-floor bank and climbs out the bathroom window onto the ledge, ready to end it all. But as he’s steeling himself to jump, a crew of gunmen bursts into the bank and begins viciously shooting employees and customers. With nothing to lose, Nate climbs back inside, confronts the robbers, and with his military training, starts taking them out, one by one. The last man standing leaves Nate with a cryptic warning: “He will make you pay in ways you can’t imagine.” Soon enough, Nate learns what this means.

This was the second Gregg Hurwitz book and I liked it very much. Scott Brick is a fave narrator and he always lends credibility to a book in my estimation. Fast moving intricate unusual themed story.... so well read that you forget about the narrator.

No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen cloistered monks live in peace and prayer. They grow vegetables, they tend chickens, they make chocolate. And they sing. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world-famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose effect on both singer and listener is so profound it is known as “the beautiful mystery.”

Its always great to find an new ( to me) author who has written lots of books. Im going to go back to the beginning of the series " Still Life" I love the fleshed out characters, the expressive narration and the who dunnit that keeps you guessing till the end. I love books that teach you something along the way too...a little bonus without a lesson plan. All the references and short snippets of the Gregorian Chants are just marvelous. The main character is Inspector Gamache. He's a very subtle fellow, insightful, thoughtful...clever. The French dialogue here and there...also brings flavor.

The Canadian equivalent to BBC has filmed a 2 hr movie based on the first book " Still Life" . The inspector is played by Nathaniel Parker who plays Inspector Linley in Elizabeth George's series. ( also fab)

Debut novelist Eowyn ivey’s experience living in the Alaskan wilderness brings a palpable authenticity to The Snow Child. Alaska in the 1920s is a difficult place for Jack and Mabel. Drifting apart, the childless couple discover Faina, a young girl living alone in the wilderness. Soon, Jack and Mabel come to love Faina as their own. But when they learn a surprising truth about the girl, their lives change in profound ways.

But oh my goodness I am so glad I did. I was hesitant because I thought it would be more of a child's book. I was so wrong. This is a beautiful written and narrated story. It's about a
couple eking out a life in the frozen extremes of Alaska in the 1920's. Their excruciating sadness at the loss of their own premature baby and the magical appearance of another child. One that seems to have sprung from their hopes and dreams. The narrator has a beautiful patient voice that harmonizes with the gentle but intense story. You'll love this book. Im very partial to action packed mysteries and thrillers but was captivated from the very beginning. I can't wait to see what this author writes next. Ill be waiting…..

In The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction, inserting her inimitable voice into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Spanning much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the novel follows the fortunes of the extraordinary Whittaker family as led by the enterprising Henry Whittaker - a poor-born Englishman who makes a great fortune in the South American quinine trade, eventually becoming the richest man in Philadelphia.

So you know already this epic story is about the lives of firstly Henry Whittaker..a brash unlovable character who succeeds amazingly well in the business of (basically) pharmaceutical botany and his brilliant but lonely daughter Alma…who spends her life studying mosses….it sounds so boring but it's a fabulously interesting tale and I was hooked after the first few minutes. Of course the narrator is one of the very best. A melodious perfectly moderated voice….believable accents….just the right speed and
style. This is one of my favorites….unexpectedly.

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: his sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

I hope the main character features in sequels in the future, Comoran Strike is such an
appealing personality. He reminds me of Harry Hole in the Jo Nesbo books...damaged,
rough, and completely endearing in his faults and intellect.

The narrator did a marvelous job with all the characters....seamless and believable.

thriller with a nightmare scenario: a parent who loses her child in a bustling international airport. Young Jimmy Higgins is snatched from an airport security checkpoint while his guardian watches helplessly from the glass inspection box. But this is no ordinary abduction, as Jimmy is no ordinary child. His mother was Scarlett, a reality TV star who, dying of cancer and alienated from her unreliable family, entrusted the boy to the person she believed best able to give him a happy, stable life: her ghost writer, Stephanie Harker.

Before Harry took on the neo-Nazi gangs of Oslo, before he met Rakel, before The Snowman tried to take everything he held dear, he went to Australia. Harry Hole is sent to Sydney to investigate the murder of Inger Holter, a young Norwegian girl who was working in a bar. Initially sidelined as an outsider, Harry becomes central to the Australian police investigation when they start to notice a number of unsolved rape and murder cases around the country. The victims were usually young blondes. Inger had a number of admirers, each with his own share of secrets, but there is no obvious suspect.

We are introduced to Harry Hole....making sense of all the references ( in subsequent books) to the events that occur in this first book.

John Lee is one of my favorite narrators. The anticipation I feel when looking for a new book is always peaked when John Lee is the narrator. Wonderful Norwegian accents....

This a a great mystery, complicated, unexpected and you wont see the ending coming.
