    >No Man Is an Island is a collection of 16 essays in which Thomas Merton plumbs aspects of human spirituality. Merton treats the “basic verities on which the spiritual life depends”. Essay themes include hope, conscience, sacrifice, charity, sincerity, mercy, and silence. The work is threaded through with Merton’s deep awareness that we are all called to “live not for ourselves but for others”.

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not, unless they were both a detective story and king fan. There are a great many detective books of equal quality available.

    Any additional comments?

I question if this book would find a publisher if it were written by an unknown author. The characters are particularly comeling or real, and the plot hold few surprises. Portraying African Americans as either gang banger or Barack Obama has become cliche.
    Will Patton is excellent.

  • Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao

Five hundred years before the birth of Jesus, a God-realized being named Lao-tzu in ancient China dictated 81 verses, which are regarded by many as the ultimate commentary on the nature of our existence. The classic text of these 81 verses, called the Tao Te Ching or the Great Way, offers advice and guidance that is balanced, moral, spiritual, and always concerned with working for the good.

    Overall

Dyer appears to believe there weren't enough words in the Tao Te Ching. He rambles on for hours telling us how we should lead our lives. Like many westerners trying to teach eastern philosophies he dumps his enthusiasm on the listener without the subtlety and effectiveness of an good teacher. True insight is not bought by the pound.
