This was my first Audible download, and an excellent choice. About halfway through I wondered why I had never heard of it. About 3/4 through I kept imagining it as a movie.. done by Tim Burton. It then played in my head as such. The main characters are well developed, and the action was spaced well between amusing exchanges. I really enjoyed the comic relief and the characters own disbelief at the implausible situations. Some of which rivaled the scariest horror stories. If a comedy -drama is a dramedy.. is this book then a horrordy.. or comodor? thrillady? That was my perception.. comedy-horror.
I have since listened to 6 or 7 other audio books..from sci-fi, to murder mystery, and this book still stands out as very original and well done and highly enjoyable. For reference, The Help was one of the most recent audio listens, (which I also HIGHLY recommend), the characters tugged at my heart and soul. In comparison A Dirty Job was just as well written and just as worth a read or listen.
regarding other reviewers trouble with the language, I found the dialog believable and written as some people actually speak. I wonder if those reviewers refrain from movies with coarse language. I cannot recall any action or suspense films without it. I would bet money they don't watch any HBO shows either. Both Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire are full of foul language uttered by excellent characters in excellent shows. The plot and character interactions are what count the most to me.
so, if you are a non-discriminatory reader and enjoy most genres, then this is must read and very original and enjoyable. If you only read kiddie lit and Christian Fiction, then this may be way too ADULT for your tastes and should avoid.
