Lucia Sartori is the beautiful 25-year-old daughter of a traditional Italian immigrant family in 1950s Greenwich Village. She boldly becomes an apprentice for a ready-to-wear clothing designer at B. Altman's famous department store. Though she is sought after as a potential wife by the best Italian families, she works hard and remains as devoted to her career as to her family.

Joseph Mieczkowski Jr. says: "What a wonderful book!"
    "One of the best"
    Overall

Lucia Lucia is beautifully narrated and is hard to turn off. I didnt want it to end and yet I listened to it voraciously. It takes a bit to make me emotional, but this book really pulled at my heart strings. Listen to this book while taking a long walk, and you'll barely know you've exercised.

The in-crowd wears Gucci, but one girl wears her heart on her sleeve. When a chance meeting propels Bette into a new role as a party planner, she can hardly believe her luck. A job that pays you to party! Running with the cool Manhattan pack, gaining VIP access to the city's hottest spots, and meeting "everyone worth knowing" is a million miles away from the number-crunching and paper-pushing of her old banking job. Overnight, the greatest city in the world has become her sexy, late-night playground.

    Hildegard says: "Disappointing"
    "A fun listen"
    Overall

So this isn't the most intellectual work of fiction, but it is a fun listen. The setting is vibrant and amusingly shallow. If you like a 'sex in the city' / harlequin style read then you'll enjoy this book. It could have been edited more and at times leaves built up events too quickly. However, overall I enjoyed this book and didn't want it to end.

Claudia and Ben are the perfect couple. Ever since their first date, when they both admitted they had no desire for children, their courtship and marriage seemed destined. Their relationship is about freedom, possibility, and exploration. About being together because they want to be together. Not because children are caging them with 18 years of obligation. But then Ben changes his mind: He does want children, after all.

    Christine says: "Just Okay"
    "An OK listen"
    Overall

This book delves into the theme of whether or not to become a parent. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the ending leaves you hanging which was frustrating. It's an OK listen. The characters are interesting but could have been explored with a little more depth. The problems encountered by the main character and her sisters did hold my attention but I did get a little annoyed with their reactions - they seemed flighty to me. Overall, an easy and intersting listen but not as challenging or deep as it could have been.

  • Her Husband: Hughes and Plath, A Marriage

Ted Hughes married Sylvia Plath in 1956, at the outset of their brilliant careers. Plath's suicide six-and-a-half years later, for which many held Hughes accountable, changed his life, his closest relationships, his standing in the literary world, and brought new significance to his poetry.

    Bernadette says: "engaging"
    "An interesting listen"
    Overall

This is a really interesting biography. If you're into Plath then this is a great listen. A little on the long side, but it does go into depth about the relationship between Hughes and Plath without a great deal of bias. This book shares a side of Plath not seen in other bios. Recommended.

Miss Julia Garnet, prompted by the death of a friend, goes to live in an out-of-the way corner of Venice. Here she meets with people and experiences which fracture her known world: Nicco, a beautiful Italian boy; Carlo, an art dealer; and the enigmatic English twins engaged in restoring the Chapel-of-the-plague, whose mysterious history includes a lost 14th-century diptych.

    Cushla says: "Lingering"
    "Lingering"
    Overall

Set in Venice, this story leaves a lingering taste of imagery and characters. The main tale is interrupted and enhanced by another minor tale which at times is intriguing but can sometimes be confusing. It is an enjoyable listen, especially if you're interested in art, history and Venice.

It's more than 20 years since single art teacher Marion Hardcastle visited Italy, but memories of that happiest of times still haunt her. So when Tom and Janice invite her on holiday, the lure of a Tuscan Palazzo proves irresistible. However, Marion soon realizes that she might not have a lot in common with her holiday companions, and the fabulously rude owner is more interested in entertaining her celebrity visitors than her other guests.

    connie says: "de-LIGHT-ful"
    "Easy and Enjoyable"
    Overall

Tucan Soup isn't the most challenging book to listen to, but it is an easy and enjoyable read. The characters are captured vividly by the narrator, making the tale both moving and pretty funny. The book does have depth, and I was sad to reach the end of the novel.

After backpacking her way around India, Sarah Macdonald decides she hates the country with a passion. When a beggar at the airport reads her palm and insists she will one day return, and for love, she screams "Never!" and gives the country, and him, the finger.

    Meredith says: "Inspiring and witty"
    "An excellent listen"
    Overall

Holy Cow is a fantastically funny listen. It is vivid in its descriptions of the sounds, sights and especially smells of India. It inspires you both to go there and enjoy home, at the same time. If you love travel writing which attempts to get to the heart of culture and the person taking the journey, get this book. It's one of my all time favourites.
