I typically enjoy this type of story, good vs evil, end of world, epic struggle- but not so much this time around. The story borrowed heavily from the "The Road" by Cormack McCarthy and "The Stand" by Stephen King. Same apocalyptic environment as The Road, same kind of journey, same bleakness which I did not enjoy- although at least this time you knew why. Post nuclear war- everything that grows from the earth is dead- yet a horse lives 7 years, eating what? Similar to The Stand in the good vs evil department- similar plot lines, very similar character development- yet just not up to the same standards. Once again- thanks audible for your app that allows listening at an accelerated rate! I did hear The Stand has an new, longer format out- might just have to revisit that book.....
It was on sale so I grabbed the book- not bad but not good enough for me to want the next in the series- unless there is another sale. I did enjoy Hunger Games- it was unique- this one not so much.... Good enough that I finished it but not compelling. I think most of the open questions that entice you to go to the next book can be answered in a summary, maybe I will get motivated to find one. Character development was good, no real plot twists, it is a journey on a highway- straight and to the point at a steady 55MPH
After a steady diet of fantasy I needed to change venues- this book was very satisfying. Good character development, believable storyline- emphasis on technology was not as overwhelming, woven well into the storyline. Overall left me with an appetite for another in the series.
I really don't like starting a series unless all the books have been published- since I usually listen to the first one again before starting on the next in the series if it has been a long time between books. As long as these books are I am hopeful the next one comes out soon while the series is still fresh in my mind. Overall another excellent book by Brandon! Some new twists and turns- some you could see coming from a distance on the 'shattered plains', others a little more difficult to discern, and the pace was just a bit slower as he injects more complexity. The performance was very good!
One of the few books I have read from a German point of view so it was interesting. I think the 'soldier' was especially kind to his experience in hindsight. Obviously he was intelligent, awfully hard to believe he did not have a better understanding of what was really going on politically. If he is truthful, it should give pause to anyone on what a country is capable of when there is no free press to ask the hard questions and hold the political leaders accountable. Think about that the next time you see a politician being asked uncomfortable questions, irregardless of which side, politically, that you are on.
Let me know if this review was helpful!
I really like "Longmire" on cable TV, A&E. Crusty old sheriff that gets through to the truth with a western theme. The book is pretty good too, reminds me of other classic western series, although the character in the book is not quite up to the same level of integrity as the TV show sheriff. This book was on 'sale' so I bought it even though it was not the first in the series- that was not a problem. Given my familiraity with the TV version probably helped.
BTW- if you have read this far- I would appreciate a rating if my review was helpful- thanks!
I prefer to select books in a series once the series has been completed, I wish I had known this was not a trilogy.
It was good, some parts very good, but for me too much time on interpersonal relationships/politics and not enough on the interesting plot line. Worth the time but I really hope the author focuses on more story, less sex scenes and politics. This is about us (humans) versus them, please focus.
Also- this book especially jumps about in timelines with little heads up it is happening. More than once I had to check to ensure I had the correct book in the correct order. He covers ground from previous books throughout the story, treating some chapters as prequels to chapters from the previous books- sounds confusing(?)- at times it certainly was.
Based on a google search it looks like the next in the series is going to be a year or more....
This book starts off fast and gets you thinking, the main character is worth rooting for from start to finish. Solid story, very believable, and educational as well. Never give in, always think it through, great lessons in perseverance! I have always related to humor under stress- this story delivers both!
I have been an Audible listener for over 10 years, this book is at the top of my recommendation list and one of the very few I rate 5 stars all across! Listening to this book was amazing, hit on many emotional levels, great performance, and just what I needed after recent selections that were less than stellar.
If you like Laura Hillenbrand's books (Seabiscuit, Unbroken) this one will be a winner! I workout on indoor rowers- this book was an incredible description of what it takes to compete at world class levels (which I don't come close too), makes me want to get on the water. Seriously, an amazing story, gave me chills on some passages while doing yard work in DC heat/humidity. If you want to know what some of the greatest generation was doing before WWII, give this book a shot.
I could go on, I could offer suggestions, but just download this book and enjoy a great story. I hear it is coming out as a movie- I can only hope it does. You will want to listen to the book first, then go to YouTube and watch some of the old footage of the 1936 Olympics! This book should be required reading for every crew team, at any level!
Yes, but only because I have enjoyed all his other books.
The end, finally it came. This was a little tedious for me, it reminded me why I was not enthralled in European history, too many family names to recall and sort out. It is the history of the era, but as a casual listener, meaning while I am typically involved in other activities ( driving, chores, exercise) it was not a great story that cleanly captured my attention. I am a Ken Follet fan, I have the next in the series, but I am waiting a bit before listening to the next book.
