I am a Joyce Carol Oates fan. This book tells her own story of being widowed, the shock and grief, the acknowledgment, the beginning of moving on. It described their marriage which I found fascinating - deeply satisfying while reserved in a way. I found it deeply moving. So often grief is underplayed. This account is touching in its truth.
This was an entertaining crime novel that did make me want to keep reading, though if I'd lost the book I may not have re-purchased it. I liked it, and it will be a somewhat entertaining film, but am puzzled about those who put it on lists of the best 100 books, best books of the year and so on. The outcome is just not that original, the plot has been written before, the characters are not special. It is a pretty good read, but not fine literature by any means.
Don't be fooled- this is not a spy novel. This is an offensive novel about Jesus Christ appearing to folks in Iran and converting Islamists. It is disrespectful of Islam, and unsophisticated and corny in its premises. Moreover, it's only part 1, so don't hang in there hoping at least to find out what happens in the action or romance parts. I feel so cheated of the hours I spent listening! Reviews should fairly mention this Christian bent and that none of the issues will be resolved! -submitted by a Christian reader who has respect for other faiths.
This won awards? Everyone in my book club expressed surprise at this books' literary success; only 2 of 10 of us had finished it- I had only because I had it read to me. If you don't speak any Spanish there are apparently websites for translation (why wasn't it footnoted?) I never cared about any of the characters. Really poor.
I was fascinated by the Mary Magdalene/Rome aspect of Dan Brown's other books, and pre-ordered this one, and I enjoyed it well enough though the content that I really loved is spent. This book is about the threat of overpopulation, and involved delicious travel to European spots to unravel the mystery. I completely appreciated his theme, though I've been depressed ever since I read it as he describes a very real concern. Considering that the Rome connection is kind of spent, this is a good read. Expect to experience a concerning wake-up call.
I am a devoted fan of this author and pre-ordered this book. Hosseini can capture love and heartbreak and bittersweetness in a story like no one else. This dear story is about sibling love and loss. Beautifully accented voices do the narration, voices that make you listen a little closer, draw in, and feel what is being said in a nearly tactile way. The story is rich and layered and satisfying. Hosseini doesn't give the ending that you want, he gives the ending that you know in your bones is true to life. He has given us another masterful story.
A good friend recommended this book to me so I wanted to like it. I do generally like the ex-pats in Africa topic. This book however never developed a character I cared much about, and I was glad it wasn't that long.
If you are interested in quantum mechanics, which is why I was told to read this book, it is very vague and explains very little if any.
If you are interested in midevil jousting and chase scenes, you will find this intriguing. I found it terribly boring.
I bought this as soon as I saw the way it was being promoted, but was very disappointed. I found that I didn't care about any of the characters and in fact I could hardly finish it. Partly I think it was a book about celebrities, and unless you're one who reads the celeb news and show business, I don't think you will be much interested in this book. I wouldn't have finished it except it was so promoted by Audible that I kept expecting more. Next time, I'll be less impressed by Audible reviews!!
I have always enjoyed Barbara Kingsolver. This book is an enjoyable story- but even more, it is a chilling forecast of what is happening on our earth, as species begin to flag with all the implications of our global warming and pollution. Thanks, Barbara, for the work you are dong to painlessly educate us about the mess we're in.
