Penn Jillette is a devout atheist. He's a bit obnoxious, very pragmatic, extremely open and sometimes quite explicit. So if you're a prude - just don't buy the book!
I really enjoyed this book. Penn Jillette's narration really made it a wonderful listening experience. He tells a lot of funny stories and opens up about his own version of morality and God (or lack thereof). I find his honesty to be very refeshing. You can tell that underneath his bravado - he is a kind and caring family man. This was a fun listen.
Not all of his stories are crazy. He opens up about loved ones and tells some very sweet and sensitive personal stories too.
I'm not sure that he'll create many new atheists with this book. But if you are looking for a laugh and a little insight into the speaking half of P&T - buy the book.
I've been a big fan of the Wallander series and thoroughly enjoyed Dick Hill's narration. Mankell has written a wonderful book - again. However, my comments on this audio book are mainly regarding the narration. Robin Sachs may have a better grasp on Swedish pronunciation than Hill but his narration was soooo sloooow that I had to put my I-pod on 2x speed to listen without losing my mind. This may really be the last of Wallander. I wish the publishers had been consistent and kept Dick Hill on for this one. Robin Sachs' reading sort of ruined the end of this series for me.
Bryson's writing is wonderful and his narration is superb. He has a fantastic, witty and dry sense of humor that is sure to please almost any reader. I purchased this audiobook back in 2001 and have probably listened to it once a year since then. I still find myself laughing out loud every time I listen even though I know the entire story. I have now read or listened to all of his travel books. Each one is very entertaining but this (my first encounter with Bryson) will always remain my favorite.
Bryson manages to mix a wonderul adventure tale with some great little history, ecology and geography lessons. If you are looking for a good light hearted comic adventure, I would highly recommend this book.
