  • My Inappropriate Life: Some Material Not Suitable for Small Children, Nuns, or Mature Adults

In her hilarious New York Times best seller You’ll Never Blue Ball in This Town Again, Heather McDonald recounted her adventures as an unwilling virgin in Hollywood. Now happily married with three wonderful kids, she shows that life as a grown-up - even a pretend grown-up - has its challenges. Heather’s a working mom with parents who live next door, a sister who keeps asking for one of her still-fertile eggs, and friends who are up to more hijinks than even Heather can handle.

What would have made My Inappropriate Life better?

    Chelsea Handler

What was most disappointing about Heather McDonald’s story?

    The delivery

What didn’t you like about Heather McDonald’s performance?

    She couldnt deliver a line?

What character would you cut from My Inappropriate Life?

Sorry Heather, your stories arent funny, and could have been.

    Any additional comments?

I think she is fab on Chelsea Lately, but this sees like a money grab. So disappointing after Ross Matthews book. More guidance from Chelsea and the authors producers would have saved ths dull, poorly executed lack of entertainment.

  • For Love of Politics: Bill and Hillary Clinton: The White House Years

During their eight years in the White House, Bill and Hillary Clinton worked together more closely than the public ever knew. For Love of Politics is the first book to explain the dynamics of their relationship, showing that it is impossible to understand one Clinton without factoring in the other.

What would have made For Love of Politics better?

Some objectivity. Less personal attacks on their character. Seriously the only person inside your head is you.

Would you ever listen to anything by Sally Bedell Smith again?

I was impressed by her biography of Queen Elizabeth, though that was weighed towards a loving tribute. Millions have a visceral opinion of the Clintons, and millions of words have been used to describe their every action in the Whitehouse. It therefore doesn't offer any balance or effort of objectivity to simply find quotes from people that agree with your position that these people are evil.

What does Marc Cashman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He does a great job reading.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Not really. I didn't feel I was learning anything beyond the character attack, so turned it off about half way. And I am not trying to be biased. I have read most modern president bios and enjoyed Clinton and George W Bush. It about understanding the perspective.

    Any additional comments?

I think the author did herself a disservice by putting this out in the world.

  • Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

    Watching it on tv

What could Laura Hillenbrand have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Penned the screenplay for Tom Hanks

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

He did his best. Love you Dick Gilmore

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    The reader.

    Any additional comments?

Watch Tom Hanks talk to a soccer ball. More interesting than this and you can get through that in two hours. I cant understand the editor hype for this one.

John Milton Cooper, Jr., is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s preeminent Woodrow Wilson biographers. This thoroughly researched profile of America’s 28th president is universally hailed for its scholarship and insight into the life and career ofone of the nation’s most polarizing leaders.

What would have made Woodrow Wilson better?

    Concentrate on his presidency

What was most disappointing about John Milton Cooper’s story?

It was dull. So many insignificant details. What a bore for a man that had just great ideas

How did the narrator detract from the book?

    Drawl. Sleep walking

What character would you cut from Woodrow Wilson?

I cant rememer anything its that boring

    Any additional comments?

Read the policy not the politics. This was painful, not sure who would get excited by this, youd have to be in a coma.

As a young kid growing up in a farm town, Ross Mathews might as well have wished for a pet unicorn or a calorie-free cookie tree to grow in his front yard. Either of those far-fetched fantasies would have been more likely to come true than his real dream: working in television in Hollywood, California. Seriously, that stuff just doesn't happen to people like Ross. But guess what. It totally did.

What did you love best about Man Up!?

    Ross' self depreciating humour

What did you like best about this story?

His stories are very funny, and he is very self aware, proud and kind

Have you listened to any of Ross Mathews’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Just on TV. Im glad he is young, cause this auto bio is early, highly entertaining, but it means we may get MORE in the future.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

He made me laugh while walking down the street

    Any additional comments?

He is a diamond in the rough. Bravo Jay for putting this guy on tv.

The Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Peter the Great, Nicholas and Alexandra, and The Romanovs returns with another masterpiece of narrative biography, the extraordinary story of an obscure young German princess who traveled to Russia at fourteen and rose to become one of the most remarkable, powerful, and captivating women in history.

Would you try another book from Robert K. Massie and/or Mark Deakins?

I have read most of Mr. Massie's major works and thoroughly enjoyed their readability, construction and information. The reading of this however made one of the most fascinating lives in history in such an interesting time seem dull.

Would you ever listen to anything by Robert K. Massie again?

    Yes.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Mark Deakins?

Someone that cares about the material.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Catherine the Great?

I would have advised Mr. Deakins not to use an effeminate voice to narrate Catherine. It was distracting and irritating.
