Listeners looking for a fresh twist on vampire tales need look no further than the erotically charged Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Mary Luce is dissatisfied with her life and her job. But when she is unwittingly thrust into the vampire dominion, everything changes. Falling under the protection of the Brotherhood's strongest member, Rhage, she soon finds herself drawn to his animalistic urges.

    Overall

I really like this series, at least the two that I have listened to. J. R. Ward has created people that I'm interested in, that I want to learn more about. It really is a shame that the narrator doesn't do a better job of distinguishing the charactors, tho. Every once in a while it gets a bit confusing. Different voices for each of the members of the brotherhood would have given them all so much more depth. But the stories are so interesting that I manage to get past the narrator. There's lots of sizzling romance so it that's not your cup of tea, don't get into these books. But if you are, these are great.

Dr. Samantha Moore is one of the youngest and most acclaimed researchers in the world. Her specialty is blood, and she has been recruited by the largest pharmaceutical company in Scotland. For what purpose, she cannot begin to imagine, but in an attempt to break out of her painfully shy shell, she throws caution to the wind and leaves her family and best friend behind in Savannah. Dr. Kade Gunnach is taking a chance hiring an outsider, but he's desperate to find out how to help his sister.

I need to start with the narrator. She has an awesome Scottish brogue that I could listen to forever and her performance of dialog is pretty good for the most part. But her narration is absolutely awful. The cadence and emphasis she uses is very distracting and annoying. It's over dramatized and stilted. Hard to explain, but listen to the sample before buying this book. It's hard to tell if the dialog was really pretty lame or it was just the way it was performed. I won't be listening to any more that are narrated by Valerie Gilbert so I will probably read them instead.

The story is pretty good although the premise that Samantha moves to Scotland because she is a renown researcher and lands a job for the purpose of solving a mysterious malady is almost completely ignored.

Called on a dangerous assignment, leopard shifter Conner Vega returns to the Panama rainforest of his homeland, looking every bit the civilized male. But as a member of the most lethal of the shifter tribes, he doesn’t have a civilized bone in his body. He carries the scent of a wild animal in its prime, he bears the soul-crushing sins of past kills - and he’s branded by the scars of shame inflicted by the woman he betrayed.

    Overall

This installment of the series is more like the first two. It takes place in the rain forest and and the characters are wonderful. Phil Gigante does a great job performing the characters and the accents are superb. I could feel the heat and humidity of the forest and the passion of the characters. I highly recommend all the books in this series altho I liked the last one the least.

Bred by capricious parents for his innate leopard-shifting abilities, billionaire Jake Bannaconni has spent his life in an emotional vacuum - especially after a tragic twist of fate left him to raise his infant son alone. But when his path crosses that of an enigmatic young woman, Jake’s life takes a detour he never fathomed.

    Damita says: "Surprising"
    "Burning Wild was very disturbing"
    Overall

This book was very different from the first two and I found it disturbing. The sex was just as raw which I have no problem with but the domineering, manipulative, controlling attitude of Jake towards Emma and the subservient, submissive, surrendering attitude of Emma's was a classic abuser/abused relationship. It was hard to listen to. The first 1/2 hour of the book describes the abuse Jake suffered during his childhood which was well written and therefore also hard to listen to.

This story took place on a Texas ranch, not the lush, sensual, moody rain forest of the first two books. The leopard theme was not as integral a part of the story either.

The narrator did a pretty good job but I would say that the way he performed this made it feel rawer.

It's not a book I will listen to again as I might the others, but I don't know that I can say that I don't recommend it either. I was glad when it was over but I didn't consider not finishing it.

Ian Maclean's arrogance hides a terrible secret - for decades he was held prisoner by demons. Not a day goes by that he isn't tormented by his darkest fears of powerlessness. Now he is about to sell to the highest bidder a page he's stolen from the Book of Power - if one woman doesn't stop him.

    Overall

I hesitate to say it again but it's such a shame that such good stories are read by a narrator that is so irritating. All her characters are portrayed well except the lead female. In all the books she has narrated, the lead always, ALWAYS has this stupid self-rightous, whiney tone that is soooooo annoying. It makes the character so one dimensional and they aren't. Each of the woman in these books has some depth and it gets lost in the attitude.

Other than the narrator, I really like these stories. The good/evil premise is a bit extreem and black and white but the people are interesting and it's well written.

The stranger silently summoned her from across the continents, across the seas. He whispered of eternal torment, of endless hunger, of dark, dangerous desires. Somehow, American surgeon, Shea O'Halloran could feel his anguish, sense his haunting aloneness, and she ached to heal him, to heal herself.

Listening to audiobooks can make the experience of a story very complicated. I think this story is pretty good but there was something about it that bothered me. It might have had something to do with the narrator. Her pronunciation of words was very precise and stilted. She tried to add emotion to the reading but it fell short.

I have listened to two of he Dark Series books and they just don't measure up to Scarletti Curse and Lair of the Lion, both of which I really enjoyed.

In Stolen, on a mission for her own elite pack, Elena Michaels is lured into the net of ruthless Internet billionaire Tyrone Winsloe, who has funded a bogus scientific investigation of the "other races" and their supernatural powers. Kidnapped and studied in his underground lab deep in the Maine woods, these paranormals - witches, vampires, shamans, werewolves - are then released and hunted to the death in a real-world video game.

I didn't like this story as much as the first one, Bitten. I also really, really liked Aasne Vigesaa, who narrated Bitten, and didn't really like the sound of Nell Canning's voice. That's a very subjective thing so take a listen yourself.

This story just didn't grab me as much as the first one. It felt like I had more of an emotional reaction to Elena's situation than Elena did. The characters seemed very one dimensional. Regardless, I'm looking forward to listening to the next book.

Now a Dark-Hunter in modern-day New Orleans, Talon meets Sunshine, who is key to ending his curse once and for all - not to mention helping him to save New Orleans from an ancient god bent on total destruction....

    Overall

I loved this book. I loved the story and Carrington MacDuffie is a wonderful narrator. It's the second book in a series but can be considered a stand alone book. There is a reference to the previous story but it's explained enough that it's not confusing. It was fun to listen to because I love the Irish brogue.

A con artist and seductress, Meredith Spooner lived fast - and died young. Now it seems Meredith's last scam - embezzling more than a million dollars from a college endowment fund - is coming back to haunt Leonora Hutton. An e-mail just arrived in which Meredith - in fear for her life - explains that the money is waiting for Leonora in an offshore account ... and a safe-deposit key is on the way.

This was a good story and well written, as most of Jayne Ann Krentz's stories are. The narrators were good individually but put together they sound like they are reading a script. I liked the story so the narrators were not a showstopper.

I really enjoyed this book. The story was engaging and actually had some depth. The characters were realistic and I liked them. The reader was very good. I got lost in the story and had no problem distiguishing characters. Her reading was at a very comfortable pace. I would listen to anything read by Nellie Chalfant.
