  • Water for Elephants

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By Sara Gruen
    • Narrated By David LeDoux, John Randolph Jones
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

    Kindle Customer says: "Great Narration!!"
    "All time favorite. Highly recommend"

I think this is my all time favorite listen to date - and I didn't think anything would surpass the Hungry Tide. The story was captivating and the switch between the old and young Jacob was done extremely well. Very goood characterization - even for the elephant. I would highly recommend this book.

  • Niagara Falls All Over Again

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 14 mins)
    • By Elizabeth McCracken
    • Narrated By George Guidall
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Sometimes in life, opposites are drawn to each other; somehow, each providing the other with something they don't have, but desperately need. National Book Award finalist Elizabeth McCracken pens this graceful, moving tale of an unlikely pairing of two men and their lifelong partnership in show business.

    Steven says: "A Keeper!"

I found listening to this book just delightful. It kept my interest thoughout and the characters were very real.

  • Crusader's Cross: A Dave Robicheaux Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 44 mins)
    • By James Lee Burke
    • Narrated By Will Patton
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Critically acclaimed and best-selling crime writer James Lee Burke returns to Louisiana where his ever-popular hero, Dave Robicheaux, sleuths his way through a hotbed of sin and uncertainty.

Suzn F says: "Another delicious book from JLB"
    "Maybe too much Dave"

I like the Dave Robicheaux series and have always read, not listened to them. I don't know if it was the fact that I was listening or that it is one book too many in the series but I find the descriptions of weather, smells, memories repetitive and not always relevant - almost as if the author is getting too caught up in the sound of his own voice. While a good mystery, it was almost as if he said "OK, long enough, I have to end it now", without tying up the threads.

  • New Orleans Mourning

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 39 mins)
    • By Julie Smith
    • Narrated By Cristine McMurdo-Wallis

This Edgar Award-winning work offers a revealing glimpse into the hidden world of New Orleans high society and an intricately plotted murder mystery. The novel introduces rookie cop Skip Langdon, as she investigates a seamy Mardi Gras murder.

    MB says: "Tiresome"

While I listened to this book until the end, I couldn't wait for it to stop. It appeared that every character was depressed because their parent(s) didn't love them. It was a very whiny book.

  • The Deeds of the Disturber: The Amelia Peabody Series, Book 5

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 52 mins)
    • By Elizabeth Peters
    • Narrated By Barbara Rosenblat

After an adventurous season spent excavating at Dahshoor, and narrowly averting the clutches of the Master Criminal, Victorian Egyptologist Amelia Peabody Emerson and her spouse prepare for a quiet summer in England. The social and domestic routine, though interrupted by the precocious escapades of their only child, Ramses, hardly seems much of a challenge for the indomitable Emersons.

    Wende says: "Excellent Narrator"
    "Deeds of the Disturber"

I read the first of the Amelia Peabody series and really enjoyed it. Looked for another with Barbara Rosenblatt narrating since she got such excellent reviews and chose this one. I have to say that I was disappointed. Formulaic for sure. But the most irritating part was the "we have such a great sex life" and "Emerson gets my juices going" repetition. I wanted to say "All right, I've got it! You have a good sex life!". However, story was decent, narrator excellent. I am now reading an Amelia Peabody that is much later and the WONDERFUL sex life thing seems to have disappeared - so maybe it was just this book or books relatively early in the series.

  • Time and Again

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 54 mins)
    • By Jack Finney
    • Narrated By Paul Hecht

When Time and Again was published in 1970, The New York Times hailed it as "a fanciful novel that beautifully blends science fiction, nostalgia, and mystery." Millions of fans agreed, making the book a modern classic. Travel with author Jack Finney back to an incredible world where there are no such things as automobiles, airplanes, computers or television...back to January 1882.

William R. Creech says: "Good historical fiction"
    "A bit of a schlep"

While I generally enjoyed the book, I went crazy when the author read an entire article of a paper, with minute details. The descriptions of time past became very repetitive. This one may have been better abridged, although I don't believe in abridging. The general concept was neat, it was just tooooo long.
