Why we think it’s a great listen: Got 40 hours to kill? You’ll find the time when you start listening to Lee’s take on Follett’s epic – and widely celebrated – novel of 12th-century England. The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...and of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame....

    "I miss this book"
    Overall

It's now been two days since the story ended. I have a real sense of loss that the characters from this story are gone.

The characters in this story are expertly crafted, intelligent, beautiful and interesting. I loved some, hated others ... the ups and downs in this story stirred significant emotion.

I found there to be surprisingly little time spent on cathedral building given many of the other reviews here. The balance of story and structural discussion was masterfully crafted. The descriptions of the buildings in the story made me want to research structures from that time and put reality to the imagination.

As you can tell, I loved this story. I'm downloading the sequal right now and looking forward to another journey through Kingsbridge.

From the depths of the Indian Ocean, a horrific plague has arisen to devastate humankind - a disease that's unknown, unstoppable, and deadly. But it is merely a harbinger of the doom that is to follow. Aboard a cruise liner transformed into a makeshift hospital, Dr. Lisa Cummings and Monk Kokkalis, operatives of SIGMA Force, search for answers to the bizarre affliction. But there are others with far less altruistic intentions.

    "Too complicated?"
    Overall

For the most part, this was a very good book. It is well written and the characters are interesting. Terrific action scenes keep the pace high at times.

The story, however, was simply over-the-top complicated. There are too many characters and some have similar personalities. The twists and turns are thrown together rapidly and are sometimes difficult to straighten out before another is on top of you.

And, there are parts of the book that come across as pre-set movie scenes ... characters portrayed as ruthless that hesitate just long enough for intervention to save the good guys.

In the end, I was relieved that the book ended, not wishing there was more.
