  • The Sound of Things Falling

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 46 mins)
    • By Juan Gabriel Vasquez
    • Narrated By Mike Vendetti

In the city of Bogot, Antonio Yammara reads an article about a hippo that had escaped from a derelict zoo once owned by legendary Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. The article transports Antonio back to when the war between Escobar’s Medelln cartel and government forces played out violently in Colombia’s streets and in the skies above. Back then, Antonio witnessed a friend’s murder, an event that haunts him still. As he investigates, he discovers the many ways in which his own life and his friend’s family have been shaped by his country’s recent violent past.

What did you like best about The Sound of Things Falling? What did you like least?

The story was fascinating and well told. The narration was an insult, particularly to Latinos (I am Hispanic). Mr. Vendetti couldn't be bothered to learn the correct way to pronounce Spanish names, places and words? I can't believe that the editors at Audible would approve such a dismal performance.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Mike Vendetti?

I've listened to literally hundreds of narrators on Audible. When I buy a book, I never really pay attention to the narrator, because they have consistently been terrific. Lesson learned. I'll preview the book before purchasing and NEVER purchase one that has Mike Vendetti as the narrator.

  • Island Beneath the Sea: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 58 mins)
    • By Isabel Allende
    • Narrated By S. Epatha Merkerson
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Born a slave on the island of Saint-Domingue, Zarit - known as Tt - is the daughter of an African mother she never knew and one of the white sailors who brought her into bondage. Though her childhood is one of brutality and fear, Tt finds solace in the traditional rhythms of African drums and in the voodoo loas she discovers through her fellow slaves.

Madelaine says: "good story, ok narration"
    "Not Recommended"

The subject has the potential to be something really special... the makings of a blockbuster. But Allende seems to have grabbed every cliche and phoned it in. Even Merkerson seems bored with the novel. Her sing-song delivery and uneven pacing makes listening tedious.

  • Pilates Makeover to Whittle Your Middle 6-Week Program

    • ORIGINAL (2 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By Ellen Barrett
    • Narrated By Ellen Barrett

Do 3-4 Pilates toning workouts each week in addition to your regular cardio regimen in order to strengthen the abs and lower back while stabilizing the spine. These functional exercises address America's #1 trouble spot: flabby abdominals. You'll start safe, moderate exercises and gradually increase the intensity. You don't require any additional equipment beyond your own body weight. Enjoy!

    "Poorly Edited Pilates"

This is a poorly edited audible book for pilates. Pilates is meant to flow from movement to movement, building up and then cooling down. The way this audible book is edited, the exercise jump all over so you are doing movements before you have fully warmed up. Do not use this if you are new to pilates or do not know the sequences well enough to leave exercises out before you have fully warmed up.
