I bought this for my son - this is a kids book if you are unsure. The book was written in 1961 so I expect the style to be old by today's standard and but it seems to hold up fine. The male narrator lacks natural reading talent and sounds to be forcing it. The Female is just awful - I mean really awful. Fortunately she is the one asking the questions so you don't have to listen to her.

My son will like this because he is consuming everything he can get his hands on regarding meteorites and hates to read so this will work well for him.

It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Obvious WOT parallels and Michael Kramer make this an easy book to listen to. Unlike WOT there are some aspects of the character interactions that just are not feasible given human nature and politics. Spoiler - who really thinks a Duke could hang out with 3 young students and no one would catch-on? The Duke killed Augers but didn't bother to shield his own mind when beating one?

Enjoy it for what it is, but please don't expect it to be on par with WOT. You would be disappointed.

When Earth herself lay under siege by an enemy humankind could not defeat, mankind undertook one last throw of the dice: Operation Ark. Earth's final colonizing expedition was meant to build a new civilization, on a planet so distant even the Gbaba might never find it, and without the high-tech infrastructure whose emissions might betray its location.

Maybe the plot evolves past the men pretending to be Gods and manipulating the brain washed people in the beginning of the book but its a show stopper for me. I also tried David Weber's "A Beautiful Friendship" and shelved it before chapter 3.
I think David Weber is joining Veronica Roth and Diana Gabaldon on the don't bother list.

One of the bestselling novels of the 19th century, King Solomon's Mines has inspired dozens of adventure stories, including Edgar Rice Burroughs's Tarzan books and the Indiana Jones movies. Vivid and enormously action-packed, Henry Rider Haggard's tale of danger and discovery continues to shock and thrill, as it has since it was first presented to the public and heralded as "the most amazing book ever written."

Considering this was first released in 1885 the story holds up remarkably well. Language aside, the underlying plot just appeals to some fundamental elements of our human nature. Of course it also serves to remind us just how the powerful newcomer to a land tend to abuse the native peoples, animals and resources.

What makes you cringe more - the slaughter of animals for their ivory, the exploitation of a native people or great open pit mines that destroy the ecosystem and food chain?

The narrator does an excellent job - he nailed the old hag. "Her" laugh is nails on a chalk board, makes you want to fast forward.

In a world where an industrial revolution is powered by magic, Tyen, a student of archaeology, unearths a sentient book called Vella. Once a young sorcerer-bookbinder, Vella was transformed into a useful tool by one of the greatest sorcerers of history. Since then she has been collecting information, including a vital clue to the disaster Tyen’s world faces.Elsewhere, in an land ruled by priests, Rielle the dyer’s daughter has been taught that to use magic is to steal from the Angels.

If I could rate the the story by the POV's, I'd give the Tyen character a solid 4. The Rielle character's POV story line is REALLY bad. The narrator's choice of accent for the Rielle POV really exacerbated the problem, it makes the stereotyped characters seem even dumber. More interesting story gets told in the few minutes of the "Rielle" epilogue than in the rest of the book.

I would not recommend spending a credit on it. Wait for one of Amazon's sales and get it for under $5.00. Then fast forward though all the Rielle sections.
Here is what you'll need to know... - Rielle is a naive/dumb rich girl that falls for an artist. Gets caught using magic and is sent to prison. Right before she gets to the prison she uses a lot of magic - demonstrating her potential power. She arrives at the prision where she is given a second chance by the "angel" who sends her off to start-over in a far off land with instructions to only use magic to defend herself. Her guard/guide abandons her mysteriously at the boat dock.

Visiting an art museum displaying a retrospective of acclaimed photographer Kathy Moran's work, aspiring novelist Stacey Kim is stunned by the photo at the center of the show - the famous Woman with a Gun, which won a Pulitzer Prize and launched the photographer's career. Shot from behind, the enigmatic black-and-white image is a picture of a woman in a wedding dress, standing on the shore at night, facing the sea. Behind her back, she holds a six-shooter.

I'm not a modern detective fan ( excepting Tony Hillerman and Craig Johnson) so I'm not sure what made me pre-order this book, but I did.
I found the narrator easy to listen and will look at other books she has done.
The novel, while a bit shallow, was good enough to serve the purpose of providing "mind candy" while my hands were busy with other tasks.
Would I ever listen to it again - no.
Would I recommend it to my friends that are hardcore detective novel people - no.

First off - Michael Kramer is excellent and probably makes up for some weak elements in the story.
There is nothing earth shattering new here, but it is a good solid base for a series. The WOT format was obviously the basis for many of this books structures, but, no surprise they are not crafted with the same level of skill.
I look forward to the next book - can Mr. cooper improve or was this the best of his offerings.

Navajo Nation Police Officer Bernadette Manualito witnesses the cold-blooded shooting of someone very close to her. With the victim fighting for his life, the entire squad and the local FBI office are hell-bent on catching the gunman. Bernie, too, wants in on the investigation, despite regulations forbidding eyewitness involvement. But that doesn't mean she's going to sit idly by, especially when her husband, Sergeant Jim Chee, is in charge of finding the shooter. Bernie and Chee discover that a cold case involving his former boss and partner, retired Inspector Joe Leaphorn, may hold the key.

Like all Tony Hillman fans I LOVE Leaphorn and Chee, I am very grateful Anne took the incredibly brave step in writing this book. No one should expect it to be on par with her father's books.I hope she continues with the series . With time and help from a good team she will develop her own following for the Chee's and their Uncle.

While the narrator is obviously very talented and did a good job with some of the Navajo patterns of speech I could not always tell which character was speaking and she just sounded silly trying to do some voices - especially men's voices. I would encourage the audio production team to keep looking for the "perfect" voice.

When it comes to delivering a pitch, Oren Klaff has unparalleled credentials. Over the past 13 years, he has used his one-of-a-kind method to raise more than $400 million - and now, for the first time, he describes his formula to help you deliver a winning pitch in any business situation. Whether you’re selling ideas to investors, pitching a client for new business, or even negotiating for a higher salary, Pitch Anything will transform the way you position your ideas. According to Klaff, creating and presenting a great pitch isn’t an art - it’s a simple science.

    Story

There are numerous overlaps between the concepts presented here and those found in other fields of study - including adult education. Perhaps Mr. Klaff studied these while perfecting his pitching skills , or perhaps he reinvented the wheel.
It doesn't matter - he takes the abstract theory and successfully applies it to his job.

I would have found the book (and therefore the information) easier to listen to and internalize if Mr. Klaff's editors had trimmed the text by 30% - focusing on the redundancies and bombastic interludes. As it is, I found it hard to stay focused. Perhaps I'll try listening to it the next time I'm in a big traffic backup.

This book has a decent plot concept, but as an adult with a son just about to enter his teen years I found myself wondering why I didn't just go listen to him complain about why things weren't fair. Assuming the target audience is teenagers the book probably works, the teenagers find true love at the age of 15 and find out they have super powers, but they ticked off the Fallen Angels who will be back to get them. I've no doubt the teenagers will triumph over Fallen Angels who have done battle with thousands over the millennia and won every battle until they met they two outsiders in Hickville USA.
This was a Daily Deal and the narrator does a good job, these are the reasons I won't be asking for my money back.

So this was another good episode in the Lost Fleet adventures, but I am getting very tired of the portrayal of Capt. Dijionni. She is a seasoned captain of a battle cruiser, not a 22 year old co-ed know-it all. Give her character more depth and something to say other than "I told you so", "Dauntless is the best" and "oh good we finally get to shoot something".
The portrayal of the women of the grand counsel is even more stereotypically flat.

I get these are simplistic space battle books, but after this many books the readers deserve better character development. Swap the listing of every ship involved in the battle for some people details.
