On November 20, 1979, worldwide attention was focused on Tehran, where the Iranian hostage crisis was entering its third week. The same morning, the first of a new Muslim century, hundreds of gunmen stunned the world by seizing Islam's holiest shrine, the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Armed with rifles that they had smuggled inside coffins, these men came from more than a dozen countries, launching the first operation of global jihad in modern times.

"Superb insight for Muslims and Non-Muslims."
    Overall

Most "experts on Islam" from the west these days impress me mostly as crack pots with an axe to grind against Islam. At best most are those who may possess a dangerous thing: a little bit of knowledge. I must say though Trofimov demonstrates a fairly comprehensive understanding of the basics of Islam and a profound command of the historical events he writes on in this text. His style is lively and animated yet he is comprehensive and therefore satisfying. The Siege of Mecca is an important work which should be read by Muslims and non-Muslims alike. It is very very well done.

First, the unthinkable: a security breach at a secret U.S. government facility unleashes the monstrous product of a chilling military experiment. Then, the unspeakable: a night of chaos and carnage gives way to sunrise on a nation, and ultimately a world, forever altered. All that remains for the stunned survivors is the long fight ahead and a future ruled by fear—of darkness, of death, of a fate far worse.

"Epic story with a very disappointing conclusion"
    Overall

The huge amount of work that went into the overall book is betrayed by the apparently very little work that went into its conclusion. After all of those story lines, twists and turns, it just dribbles out in its ending.

On the eve of the U.S. invasion of Baghdad, as the world waits for war, a miles-high energy wave cordons a vast area from southern Canada to northern Mexico. In a moment, 99 percent of the U.S. population has been wiped from the face of the earth.

The reality of war as abomination and the need to dehumanize the other in order to make outright war on him comes across clearly. The bigotry exposed here is breathtaking and not far from accurate in some cases that exist today. Those who flinch at the description of MOBIC attitudes and inclinations may either be unwilling to consider the potential of some who they may know or maybe they would rather the light of day not be shinned on that potential? Overall this is a good listen. Characters are well developed and the story moves along briskly. I would highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed the audible book. I thought Marching Toward Hell was very interesting and the author demonstrated a pretty keen since of reality in my opinion. He pegged the "Me Too" one line parrot-like observations about Muslims and Islam that is pretty common here in America. At the same time he seems to understand the basis of Islam pretty well. I would like to have heard his opinion of Islamsist impact on mainline Muslims, but I guess a good book leaves you wanting more. I consider this a good book. Anyway, I was able to do some other things on the computer while listening to the book and I will certainly download and listen to other books. Great Program well worth the cost.
