I teach 6th grade and used this in my language arts class. My kids loved the story and immediately wanted to read the rest of the series. It is a great book to discuss current events (China's one child policy) and inspires students to read other stories.
Great story. Simple quick read for adults. Great novels for middle school!
1st of all, let me say, I love Neil Gaiman! I love his writing. The way he puts together words and sentences is beautiful. The Ocean at the End of the Lane will not disappoint with that. And Neil Gaiman's narration is perfect. I don't know how many times I've listened to him read The Graveyard Book.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane left me wanting more. I want to know more about the characters. I want to know more about their lives and the world around. What exactly are the Hempstocks for example? What was the world they came from?
Ocean is what it is. A short novel. Nothing more than a day's read. Enough to get your toes wet.
This review in no way should discourage anyone from reading or listening to Ocean. Just don't expect the depth of American Gods.
The Final Empire is a pretty good book on it's own. Well written. Wonderfully well narrated.
Just don't stop with book 1. Keep going. The series goes from Great to Amazing to There Are No Words to Describe How Much I Love This Series.
When I first found Final Empire: Mistborn Book 1, I was intrigued. It was a good novel. There were some great points and I enjoyed it. It took me a few years before I finally bought book 2 and 3 (The Well of Ascension and Hero of Ages). These two books floored me. I was not suspecting this level of depth and daily twists and turns. Many times I was sitting in the corner with my headphones in my ears HAVING to finish the next chapter, book, etc.
Things that are great about the series:
* Burning metals isn't typical 'magic.' I have never heard or read another fantasy novel that presented 'magic' in this way.
* Many genres are covered. Post apocalyptic, religion, politics, human relations, the nature of good and evil.
* Many parts of the series had me reflecting on my own life. I learned things from this series that I hope to use to become a better person.
* The Mistborn Trilogy is intellectual. The writing pulled me deeply into the world. I cared deeply what happened to all the characters.
* Michael Kramer is a fantastic narrator!
Overall, I couldn't ask for anything better. I would have to list this series as the best I have listened to and the novel as one of (if not the best) series I have ever read.
This series keeps getting better. I listened to the first novel a little over a year ago. It was good. Finally got back into the story and couldn't put the book down! Sanderson creates a fantastic world. Can't wait to see what happens in the third book.
Kramer reads the book well. He has an engaging voice that does the characters justice. Great combination!
I should have done a little research before subscribing to this show through Audible. Don't get me wrong I LOVE Car Talk. However, a quick little stroll over to their website and I quickly discovered that instead of paying Audible $13, I could have subscribed to Car Talk for free.
So, my question is, where does the money go that Audible is receiving for this? If it was being sent to Car Talk, I'd be okay with that. However, I highly doubt that. This feels a little deceptive on Audible's part.
So, Yes, subscribe to Car Talk. Just don't do it through Audible!
This is an amazing read! Hearing this book read in the child's voice makes it even more powerful. There were many times I sat in my dark car outside of the house either enthralled in the story or sitting in silence processing what just happened. I recommend this book to everyone!
I bought this audio drama on a whim. One of the best things I've gotten here on audible. Great humor. Reminds me of the wonderful British comedies of past and present. If you liked Blackadder, Python, IT Crowd, and Hogan's Heroes(I know, not British, but still great!), you will love this!
Barack Obama is a wonderful writer and a simply fantastic speaker. Very well written and very insightful. A must read for everyone regardless of how you feel politically.
This was a very good audiobook. I especially loved hearing Roald Dahl reading this himself. I just wish these wonderful stories were not abridged. Other than that, great book, great reading.
