Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Beautifully concepted audio -- with the young voice and the old voice. I almost couldn't listen to the end because of the sadness I felt -- but the author delighted us with the twists and turns. Loved it.

In his latest innovative novel, the award-winning author evokes the dazzling Tang Dynasty of 8th-century China in a story of honor and power. Inspired by the glory and power of Tang dynasty China, Guy Gavriel Kay has created a masterpiece. It begins simply. Shen Tai, son of an illustrious general serving the Emperor of Kitai, has spent two years honoring the memory of his late father by burying the bones of the dead from both armies at the site of one of his father's last great battles.

    "Fantastical Journey"
    Overall

This book started out slow, but then quickened once the characters were developed. Interweaving historical fiction with fantasy -- in great detail -- it was a captivating listen. Unfortunately at the end, there were many character threads that had to be completed -- and it was done with almost too much speed -- I'm guessing that otherwise the book would have been twice as long.

When CIA "fixer" Micah Dalton's friend and mentor turns up dead, he's put on a collision course with a killer who has a penchant for intricate knife-work and Native American mysticism, a sadist who is killing ex-CIA agents. The victims are hard-nosed field men whose only link to one another seems to be a global surveillance operation called Echelon. The murders appear to be acts of retribution. But for what?

    Overall

Not for the faint of heart . . .very graphic descriptions of assasinations in ways far too awful that I could have imagined.

That said -- fast paced thriller -- couldn't put it down. The narrator was very good. Looking forward to the next book by Stone.

  • The Four-Day Win: End Your Diet and Achieve Thinner Peace

Everyone knows how to lose weight: eat less, move more. But so many dieters who know what to do still don't do what they know. Why not? Because they don't understand the brain-body dynamics of weight loss. Now, cutting-edge research has revealed that millions of dieters following typical weight loss programs are actually programming themselves to get fatter.

    "Rings True"
    Overall

For those of us who have lost and gained weight -- it really is a mystery as to why sometimes we have the "willpower" to eat less/move more and sometimes we have no "willpower". I think Beck, in a really funny way, helps explain in fairly simple terms some of the inner voices and motivations that create our behaviors. She uses lots of easy to understand metaphors -- and helps demystify "willpower". Although you won't lose 30 pounds in 30 days with this approach, I'm giving it a try because it rings true.

I like her presentation -- it's witty and engaging

A lovely story with a nice twist at the end. Some of the twin obsession seemed a little overstated, but otherwise an enjoyable tale

In the final installment of the Tales of the Otori, the young Takeo meets his destiny, fulfilling the prophesy: "You were born into the Hidden, but your life...is no longer your own."

William T. Katz says: "Good trilogy. Book 3 is weakest."
    "Disappointing"
    Overall

The first book was beautifully written with strong characterization and enchanting details about encounters between the characters. This book jumped about, with far much detail and nuance that made the first book and part of the second book so interesting. And the characters made unlikely decisions given all the prior build-up the author had given us.

I felt the author was just trying to get through the story, and get it over with.
