These impish twins and their adventures are a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to the next one!
This thought provoking and rather original story is superbly narrated by Luke Daniels. He does the 'noir' themes in this book so very well. This is audiobook narration at its finest.
This is not an uplifting or feel good novel. Sometimes the future described seems all too possible. This is really well told, well written, fast paced, and fascinating. I had a hard time putting this one down. It reminds me a little of Nick Harkaway's Tigerman.
On the other hand it isn't overly depressing or sad per se. Just gritty and hard boiled and set in a tough time without a lot of glamour or glitz or sunshine.
This action packed and mystery filled imaginative story grabs you from the very beginning and is really hard to put down! Most excellent entertainment.
I kept me spellbound for the entire length.
First of all, the narration is really, really great.
The story starts out really slow as it eases its way under your skin. At some point it just grabs you and at times is very touching. It gets increasingly hard to put down. I can see why other reviewers might give up before that happens. If you are looking for a "slam-bang roller coaster ride" - skip this one.
Immediately after finishing, I had to go back and listen to the first hour or so again to put everything in context. It made so much more sense the second time through that part.
This story will be stuck in my head for quite some time to come. I'm looking forward to the next Nick Harkaway book already (whatever that might be).
This is wonderful storytelling. There are many interesting elements all expertly woven and beautifully read. A plot that is hard to predict; great characters; romance; mystery; magic; charming moments; sad moments; reflective and philosophical moments; historical color; and more!
Although the writing in the Joe Ambercrombie books is really good, I found them really dark and depressing, and what I liked least was that there was not a single character to identify with, like, or root for. I was hesitant to acquire this audio book because of the folks who compared it to the Joe Ambercrombie books. I think the comparisons (in those other reviews) between this book and Joe Ambercrombie's books get it wrong. This book has very good writing. Yes, it is very gory at times - however so much so it feels completely over the top - as if the author was trying to outdo himself and everyone else by having fun trying to answer the question: "How gruesome can I get?". That actually made the story kind of fun. (Unlike Ambercrombie who just makes you disgusted and depressed.) The main character may be a cheat and a thief, but he is much easier to spend time with and root for and get along with. There are quite a few other good characters too. While the bad guys are really horrible, they aren't unlikeable (in their own way). There are even hints of romance in the book. I look forward to the next one in the series. This engaging story is told by a reader who is simply fantastic!
This series was going along great, sometimes dark, sometimes positive. Then the last hour or 2 of this audio book it stopped making any sense. It felt contrived, rushed, and and out of character. It was as if the author got tired of writing and just made something up to hit the deadline. It was a very disappointing conclusion to the series.
This series leaves a bad taste in the mouth because it is so dark and depressing. None of the characters are very likable. The more you listen the less you like (or care about) any of time. The writing is very good, and the reader is very good. However the story is really not very satifying. The closest I can compare it to is Game of Thrones. (Game of Thrones was more of a soap opera though).
Wow. What a story! A young country full of hope and scientific marvels. A young president full of life. A twisted mad man. Ingenious inventors and pompous doctors. Changing the world. ... My only caveat is some of the medical procedures described are rather graphic. If you are particularly sensitive to such things the story might lose some of its appeal. (The details were an important part of the story though.) I highly recommend this incredible story!
Fun. The story really seems to capture the modern techno-saavy hipster silicon valley start-up generation culture in an imaginative, entertaining, and delightful mystery-adventure.
