Well presented, factual on every piece I know of those forces, and well edited to flow as a riveting personal account of a group of unique warriors…. the best piece of modern military history I have heard this decade.
A wide ranging career of public service allows him to provide a wide variety of interesting stories of experiences. Finally his chosen descriptions of time in the Obama administration answer the pundits question why he rushed out his autobiography before the primary & election foray.... interesting, despite two agendas.
A timely, interesting topics... an author with good insights into viewing the challenges of this form of warfare.... but organized and delivered more like a dry Phd dissertation (which it may have been) than an informative piece to others who also have studied & fought the same insurgent sets. So new perspectives, but could have been delivered in a pithy means.
This well researched piece goes well beyond the "tribal wisdom" or fables about the lucky individual who miraculously rises above their circumstances.... also well written to portray the salient points. The best of his works.
An enjoyable short survey of Australia... as valid for a new GI as for a trailer today!! Surprisingly concise survey of a vast, complex land and people, this was done in the first days of America's participation in World War II. I found it thorough even if brief.
A summary of all things termed "science" would seem daunting. This well organized and delivered survey spans the fields of cosmology, geology, physics, biology and human nature in a means that is understandable & humorous where ever possible. It served as a great way for me to hear all the advances across the sciences since I left college over 30 years ago. I now feel all "caught up"!
I met him several times while serving on the Joint Staff when he became Secretary. I was impressed at how he treated us (compared to his predecessor) and his insightful questions at what was an initial discussion of a contentious issue. I enjoyed the follow up sessions on the topic and his narrative reflects that same great attitude across national security issues. Highly recommended for anyone in or out of government service.
A very unique saga of a special set of men, going into a bad situation & the actions of brave men under amazingly difficult situations.... thou bashed in the media for several points in the book, he does a great job of explaining these military aspects to the un-initiated. Liked it.
These are rare views on how Americans viewed the world & life in France. The unique descriptions of what they "thought" GI's should learn is interesting as much for how they comment on life in America and this foreign land.
This was great to fill in all the holes of what I had heard over the years. This was the most thorough history of it I've found!!
The examples & interviews should not have been a new discovery after 2 decades of an "denied" offensive by their military for the economic battlefield..... they can't loose control of their masses and will go to war to avoid their internal collapse.
