It's 1938 in San Francisco: A world's fair is preparing to open on Treasure Island, a war is brewing overseas, and the city is alive with possibilities. Grace, Helen, and Ruby, three young women from very different backgrounds, meet by chance at the exclusive and glamorous Forbidden City nightclub. Grace Lee, an American-born Chinese girl, has fled the Midwest with nothing but heartache, talent, and a pair of dancing shoes. Helen Fong lives with her extended family in Chinatown, where her traditional parents insist that she guard her reputation like a piece of jade.

Would you try another book from Lisa See and/or Jodi Long?

I have enjoyed other books by Lisa See and would try another but not narrated by Jodi Long. Perhaps her next novel I will read instead. I read Snowflower and loved it. So perhaps this author's voice speaks better to me through reading it.

Has China Dolls turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, I loved the idea of this novel taking place in San Francisco and the whole idea of Asian performers of the time. It was just the dialogue and the narrator that did me in.

How could the performance have been better?

I found the narrators efforts to make each voice different very confusing and put on. The dialogue in this book is not stellar but with a narrator embellishing it even more, I think it made it worse.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from China Dolls?

Not sure what scenes I would cut, although the novel moved so slowly most of the way through, it was an effort to finish it. But, who can stand to waste a credit!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a wonderful audio book. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. No, it's not War and Peace but if you just need a good, mindless and funny read, try this book.

What did you like best about this story?

The story itself is a bit predictable but it also has twists and turns that kept me glued to it. I did more gardening listening to this book than many previous books!! My yard was thankful anyway.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

Loved the narration. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would, but then I already stated that I guess!!. Characters really came alive. Tanzie's voice was perfect!!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It just made me want to recommend it to all of my friends. My husband even asked what I was listening to as I had it all the time.

    Any additional comments?

Thanks for this one!! Audible is the best.

    >When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Elephant Whisperer to be better than the print version?

This reader is superb....he really captures this story so I think a listen to this book is the best.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I, of course liked the matriarch of the herd, Nana. She was amazing.

Have you listened to any of Simon Vance’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not but will definitely check him out

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There are numerous times in the novel I was moved......primarily when the author relates to the animals and shares his insights into their actions and their emotions.

    Any additional comments?

I did read online that if you are an animal lover, you can read this book without being an emotional wreck! That was good advice and was the main reason I bought this book. Yes it is touching in places but so is life. It's very beautifully written......for people as well as for animals!

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten. Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning-author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

Pat Conroy, the beloved American storyteller, is also a voracious reader. He has for years kept a notebook in which he notes words or phrases, just from a love of language. But reading for him is not simply a pleasure to be enjoyed in off-hours or a source of inspiration for his own writing. It would hardly be an exaggeration to claim that reading has saved his life, and if not his life then surely his sanity.

What did you like best about this story?

Since I have read many of Conroy's books, this gave me insight into his writings.

What does Pat Conroy bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He brings his own voice.....always a plus from any author.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I could easily put it down but wanted to go back to it.

    Any additional comments?

If you have read and enjoyed Conroy's book, this book will interest you. It gives background to his characters, his life and the people who have influenced him. He also mentions many books that have influenced his writings. A great book club selection!

In her beloved New York Times best sellers Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Peony in Love, and, most recently, Shanghai Girls, Lisa See has brilliantly illuminated the potent bonds of mother love, romantic love, and love of country. Now, in her most powerful novel yet, she returns to these timeless themes, continuing the story of sisters Pearl and May from Shanghai Girls, and Pearl’s strong-willed 19-year-old daughter, Joy.

Maida says: "Dreams of Joy and all of Lisa See's books"
    "Great Sequel"
    Overall

A great sequel to Shanghai Girls. Took a while to really get into this one and had problems with the narrator at first. But the second half of the novel really took off and the narrator's voice seemed more appropriate. Ended up exercising more than I intended just to get back to it! I also learned a lot about the reform movement in China. Well done all around.

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history. A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another....

The second part gets more interesting until finally at the end you relalize the importance of the author's work and the purspose in writing the book.
