I felt like I was brought into the darkest hole and the darkest secret on planet earth with credibility. Both journalistic AND very moving. It was a page-turner. I couldn't put it down.
Performance deserves a ten. Story is powerful and brutal. A great tome. The two books together put one's petty complaints here in the U.S. Into perspective. The book asks us to wonder about what it is to be human and conscious in times of great challenge.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The book starts on one course and then twists abruptly to another one. I liked that...I didn't see it coming. The characters are well-developed within the context of an unusual family...whose family members are matter-of-fact pure sociopaths. This ordinary presentation of extraordinary choices, people, and incidents left me thoroughly entertained. I was intrigued at the knowledge that this is a composite picture of people and families who really do exist and think in this extraordinary way.
Loved the story, the protagonist, the reader... Had I read the book myself, I could never have gotten the protagonist's voice right in my head, the way the reader did. A wonderful audible read. Only possible flaw was one or two fantastical vignettes within an otherwise hard knock detective story. Yet, if seen as pure entertainment, then there really aren't any problems.
Actors were amazing. "The Help" must be read on audible to have the best read possible. I started to read the book and then quickly switched to audible to get the voices right. This book was unusual in that each major character had their own voice in the story, and those "voices" were brought to the reader by three separate actors.
