  • The Emotional Life of Your Brain: How Its Unique Patterns Affect the Way You Think, Feel, and Live - and How You Can Change Them

Why are some people so quick to recover from a setback while others wallow in despair? Why are some people so highly attuned to others that they seem psychic, while other people put both feet in it over and over again? Why are some people always up and others always down? In this hotly anticipated book, award-winning, pioneering neuroscientist Richard J. Davidson answers these questions by offering an entirely new model of our emotions - their origins, their power, and their malleability.

Would you try another book from Richard J. Davidson and Sharon Begley and/or Arthur Morey?

    no

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Dr. Daniel Siegel

What didn’t you like about Arthur Morey’s performance?

    Never heard from Arthur?

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Emotional Life of Your Brain?

The meditations were ineffective and frustrating because of the lack of explicit direction and explanation.

    Any additional comments?

In all fairness, the format was not intended as a stand alone without video. Video of her body language would have compensated for the thin script. After all, she is an in vivo therapist.

Ellen J. Langer, Harvard professor of psychology, determines that the mindless following of routine and other automatic behaviors lead to much error, pain, and a predetermined course of life. In this thought provoking audio book, her research has been "translated" for the lay listener. With anecdotes and metaphors, Langer explains how the mindless (as opposed to the mindful) develop mindsets of categories, associations, habits of thought born of repetition in childhood and throughout schooling.

morton says: "Become mindful and set your own course!"
"Ellen J. Langer usually does much better"

Would you try another book from Ellen J. Langer and/or Bernadette Dunne?

Yes but I would first want a table of contents

Would you ever listen to anything by Ellen J. Langer again?

    absolutely

How could the performance have been better?

She stated that an abundance of research data and books exist explaining mindfulness. I was left with the impression that Langer felt an "over abundance" existed. I suppose that is why she sparingly touched on mindfulness. I believe a better title for her book would have been "Mindfulness Research and Null Hypothesis Design." Had she devoted more time explaining the dance between mindlessness and mindfulness, with less description of her experimental design and control groups, I would probably have learned more. Also the information regarding nursing home improvements is very dated. I believe she would have graded the talk a C if done be one of her students.

What character would you cut from Mindfulness?

Most descriptions of her experiments could have been shortened and balanced with data from multidisciplinary sources.

    Any additional comments?

I didn't expect her to sound so robotic after reading other of her books that were so engaging and heartfelt.
