It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

If you could sum up The Book Thief in three words, what would they be?

    Heartbreaking, but beautiful.

What other book might you compare The Book Thief to and why?

The perspective of this book is unlike any I have read about war-torn Germany.

If you could rename The Book Thief, what would you call it?

In 1907 Wisconsin, seventeen-year-old Marie Reehs is determined: She will not marry a violent man, as did her mother and grandmother before her. Day after day, Marie toils at the local laundry, watched by an older man who wants to claim her for his own. Night after night, she is haunted by the memory of her mother, who died in a mysterious accident to which her father was the only witness. She longs for an independent life, but her older sister wants nothing more than to maintain the family as it was, with its cruel rules and punishments.

Would you try another book from Randi Davenport and/or Noelle Kayser?

Probably not for a little while.

What three words best describe Noelle Kayser’s voice?

Kayser has a childlike voice; very appropriate for the character.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

This story didn't make me feel anything. It is slow-moving and fairly anti-climactic.

From one of our most accomplished and widely admired historians, a revelatory portrait of Benjamin Franklin' s youngest sister and a history of history itself. Like her brother, Jane Franklin was a passionate reader, a gifted writer, and an astonishingly shrewd political commentator.

The Odyssey tells of the heroic journey of Odysseus after the Trojan war. In his attempt to return home to Ithaca, this ancient hero is faced with obstacle after obstacle, mythic creature after mythic creature. This is an epic poem encompassing an epic journey as famous as it is classic. Translated by Stanley Lombardo.

Where does Odyssey rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Among my favorites.

What did you like best about this story?

The age of this story amazes me. One could make a 21st century movie of this and still capture the attention of audiences.

What about Stanley Lombardo (Translator) and Susan Sarandon (Introduction) ’s performance did you like?

The introductions by Susan Sarandon help explain the set-up for listeners who may not be familiar with this style of writing. Very well done.

On the night her father dies, Arlyn is certain that the man she is meant to be with will walk into her life, but fate seems to be playing a trick when John Moody knocks on her door to ask for directions. Cool, practical, and deliberate, John is dreamy Arlyn's polar opposite. Yet the two are drawn powerfully together even when it is clear they are bound to bring each other grief.

I would highly recommend any Alice Hoffman book. I became a fan after reading The Dovekeepers. Every book is different but all seem to have a haunting undertone.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Do you connect more in life with a time or people?
