On a frigid New Year’s Eve in Minneapolis, a young woman’s brutalized body falls from the trunk of a car into the path of oncoming traffic. Questions as to whether she was alive or dead when she hit the icy pavement result in her macabre nickname, Zombie Doe. Unidentified and unidentifiable, she is the ninth nameless female victim of the year, and homicide detectives Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska are charged with the task of not only finding out who Zombie Doe is but who in her life hated her enough to destroy her. Was it personal? Or could it just have been a crime of opportunity?

Is there anything you would change about this book?

There is a lot of discourse between teenagers, I don't really want to listen to that. This is not one of Hoag's best.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was the best part of the book, I really didn't foresee it.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I might wait until it's On Demand.

    Any additional comments?

If you are a fan of Hoag's Alibi Man and Deeper Than the Dead, you may not be impressed by this one.

Ambitious, charismatic, and beautiful, Nefertiti is destined to marry Amunhotep, an unstable young pharaoh. It is hoped by all that her strong personality will temper the young Amunhotep's heretical desires.

The cultural details were my favorite part of the book, from the make-up to the architecture, it was fascinating. I did have to take a break in the middle because I find reading about mad kings tiresome as well as the relationship between the two sisters. I quickly came back to it and was quite pleased with the ending.

I didn't have the same preconceived notions as many other readers. I never heard of Shannon being the next Rowling. It was a popular fantasy book, I listened, and wasn't disappointed. There are very human and historical themes intricate to this plot--(mild spoilers) discrimination, segregation, and slavery...bringing about a dystopian feel, my favorite! The book is very heavy on the fantasy. I've read about my share of vamps and witches but this book takes the cake. Every chapter is steeped in the supernatural. There were some areas of stalling where I said "get on with it" but that doesn't make me any less excited for the next installment. If you like Richelle Mead, Charlaine Harris, or even Veronica Roth, you'll like this book.

Gameboard of the Gods introduced religious investigator Justin March and Mae Koskinen, the beautiful supersoldier assigned to protect him. Together they have been charged with investigating reports of the supernatural and the return of the gods, both inside the Republic of United North America and out. With this highly classified knowledge comes a shocking revelation: Not only are the gods vying for human control, but the elect - special humans marked by the divine - are turning against one another in bloody fashion.

Arcadia is truly frightening and slightly reminiscent of the present. I wish the series would get on with the romance and allow the characters to grow and change. It contains the same good butt kicking though.

I was glad to finally listen to one of Mead's adult books. The future world she creates is very believable and full of detail. I was surprised everything wasn't explained at the beginning of the book, as Mead usually does. It got a little frustrating but then I read a review and understood that explanation would come. The supernatural element is very different from any other book I've read. This is a unique series.

Since she’d been on the outside, she’d survived an Aether storm, she’d had a knife held to her throat, and she’d seen men murdered. This was worse. Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland - known as The Death Shop - are slim. If the cannibals don’t get her, the violent, electrified energy storms will. She’s been taught that the very air she breathes can kill her. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He’s wild - a savage - and her only hope of staying alive.

The night after the fourth of July, Layton Carlson, Jr., of Red Wing, Minnesota, finally got lucky. And unlucky.

He’d picked the perfect spot to lose his virginity to his girlfriend, an abandoned farmyard in the middle of cornfields: nice, private, and quiet. The only problem was...something smelled bad - like, really bad. He mentioned it to a county deputy he knew, and when the cop took a look, he found a body stuffed down a cistern. And then another, and another. By the time Lucas Davenport was called in, the police were up to 15 bodies and counting.
