  • Hyperion

    • UNABRIDGED (20 hrs and 44 mins)
    • By Dan Simmons
    • Narrated By Marc Vietor, Allyson Johnson, Kevin Pariseau, and others
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.

Michael says: "The Shrike Awaits. Enter The Time Tombs..."
    "An Instant Classic!"

Hyperion and its sequel are absolutely wonderful books! Dan Simmons succeeded in creating an interesting and vibrant universe of unique worlds, fantastic creatures, and varied human colonies. He takes a unique approach by having each main character tell his/her own story in the first book to fully develop their characters before setting them into the main conflict of the story. I loved it and will definitely look for more Dan Simmons books in the future.

  • The Amulet of Samarkand: The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Jonathan Stroud
    • Narrated By Simon Jones
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Nathaniel is eleven-years-old and a magician's apprentice, learning the traditional art of magic. All is well until he has a life-changing encounter with Simon Lovelace, a magician of unrivaled ruthlessness and ambition. When Lovelace brutally humiliates Nathaniel in public, Nathaniel decides to speed up his education, teaching himself spells far beyond his years. With revenge on his mind, he masters one of the toughest spells of all and summons Bartimaeus, a five-thousand-year-old djinni, to assist him.

    Randy says: "Terrific Trilogy"
    "Bartimaeus for President!!"

What a great book! Jonathon Stroud has created a world ruled by Wizards. Not the Harry Potter style, but instead wizards who rely on the power of the demons that they trick and trap to do their bidding. I found myself rooting for the valiant, resourceful, and powerful demons, particularly Bartimaeus, while despising their weak, selfish, parasitic and often cruel masters. This book is great for preteen to adult.

  • The Ice Limit

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child
    • Narrated By Scott Brick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The largest known meteorite has been discovered, entombed in the earth for millions of years on a frigid, desolate island off the southern tip of Chile. At four thousand tons, this treasure seems impossible to move. New York billionaire Palmer Lloyd is determined to have this incredible find for his new museum. Stocking a cargo ship with the finest scientists and engineers, he builds a flawless expedition. But from the first approach to the meteorite, people begin to die....

Lyn says: "Wonderful, Well researched, Page Turner"
    "Couldn't Relate"

I've probably listened to 50 or so audio books and I'd put this one in the bottom 5. The characters were all 1 dimensional and I never really learned to care about any of them. The lead character who was supposedly in charge of the science expedition was never really believable as a leader or a scientist. The narration also seemed to drone on and on without much enthusiasm. Probably the most interesting part of the book was the discussions of the elegant engineering required to move the object. Otherwise, I feel like I want my 17 hours back.

  • Tamerlane: Conqueror of the Earth

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Harold Lamb
    • Narrated By Charlton Griffin

In yet another superb historical work, Harold Lamb brings the mighty Tatar leader to vivid life and shows how this ruthless commander used his superior intellect and magnetic leadership to overcome one obstacle after another. Tamerlane was truly one of the most remarkable personalities ever to emerge from the steppes of Central Asia.

curt says: "The man that conquered Afganistan"
    "I can't believe I didn't know this..."

This is the life and times of Timur, King of the Tartars and nearly the entire ancient world. Harold Lamb is a master!

  • Dark Gold: Dark Series, Book 3

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 5 mins)
    • By Christine Feehan
    • Narrated By Juanita Parker
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Alexandria Houton would sacrifice anything, even her life, to protect her orphaned little brother. But when both encountered unspeakable evil in the swirling San Francisco mists, Alex could only cry to heaven for their deliverance. Out of the darkness swooped Aidan Savage, a golden being more powerful, more mysterious than any other creature of the night.

    Heather says: "Loved this book"

The premis is interesting, but get rid of the incredibly long, annoying, and pathetic romance between the heroine and her vampire-hunter and there is perhaps 1 hour of the 12 of real interest. I will not subject myself to another Feehan novel. Men should be particularly careful.
