  • The Foundation Trilogy (Dramatized)

    • ORIGINAL (7 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Isaac Asimov, Maurice Denham, Prunella Scales
    • Narrated By Geoffrey Beevers, Lee Montague, Julian Glover, and others

The opening episode begins on Trantor, capital of the Galactic Empire, with the meeting of Seldon and Dornick, their trial, and their exile to Terminus. The action then jumps forward 50 years, to the first Seldon Crisis, where the repercussions of the recent independence of the Four Kingdoms of the Periphery are being felt on Terminus, and are handled by the first Mayor, Salvor Hardin....

James says: "How can you go wrong with a must read book for $2"
"Good voice performances, sound effects will hurt"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The voice actors are really good and interesting and this is a truly great story, but going from a voice actor to having your ears blasted off by a fake computer sounds.

What did you like best about this story?

Very interesting vision of the future, psycho linguistics is just a great idea.

Would you listen to another book narrated by the narrators?

I am good with the narrators, but I feel this should be remixed. For now I would suggest going with the Scott Brick version.

  • The Wind Through the Keyhole: The Dark Tower

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 29 mins)
    • By Stephen King
    • Narrated By Stephen King
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In The Wind Through the Keyhole, Stephen King has returned to the rich landscape of Mid-World. This story within a story within a story finds Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger, in his early days during the guilt-ridden year following his mother’s death. Sent by his father to investigate evidence of a murderous shape-shifter, a "skin-man", Roland takes charge of Bill Streeter, a brave but terrified boy who is the sole surviving witness to the beast’s most recent slaughter.

Amazon Customer says: "An exceptional story, but I miss George Guidall."
"However you feel about Wizard and Glass - Book 4"
What made the experience of listening to The Wind Through the Keyhole the most enjoyable?

Book four of the Dark Tower series was my favorite, so hearing more of how Roland came to be the Gunslinger was for me very enjoyable

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

It took some time for me to adjust to these being read by the author, George Guidall is a really tough act to follow, a couple of hours in it was no longer standing out.

  • Great Blunders in History: USS Indianapolis

    • UNABRIDGED (22 mins)
    • By The History Channel

When the U.S. cruiser Indianapolis, on a secret mission involving the delivery of an atomic bomb, was torpedoed in 1945, nobody realized that the crew was left struggling in shark-infested waters.

Brian says: "The title should have warned driven me away"
"The title should have warned driven me away"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This is pretty awful, it is full of wobbly sound affects and zoom noises. It was also not edited to remove things like the lead in and out of commercials.

I should have known better than to go for something with the title GREAT BLUNDERS IN HISTORY, but the story of the Indy really fascinates me and I was hoping for some new information.

Would you recommend Great Blunders in History to your friends? Why or why not?

    I would not

What didn’t you like about the narrator’s performance?

It is hard to tell how good or bad a job the narrator did, the musical score comes up and down and drowns him out, but I suspect he did a good job.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Great Blunders in History?

The music score and lead in / out for commercials.
