One hundred years before Ender's Game, the aliens arrived on Earth with fire and death. Earth Afire by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston is the story of the First Formic War. Victor Delgado beat the alien ship to Earth, but just barely. Not soon enough to convince skeptical governments that there was a threat. They didn’t believe that until space stations and ships and colonies went up in sudden flame. And when that happened, only Mazer Rackham and the Mobile Operations Police could move fast enough to meet the threat.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

For devoted readers of the Ender books, this is a fun listen for the history of the first Formic attacks. In terms of a standalone book, it was good, but not quite as good as some of Cards other books. It felt like it was building the whole time, but didn't quite climax. I am looking forward to the next book, this one ends when it was just getting really good.

    Any additional comments?

Another listener complained about the voice actors, I have no idea what they were talking about. The readers were terrific.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The book should have been about 1/3 of the length given the same content. But really, there should have been other content. The most like-able and engaging characters are in the beginning and the end. With more content about them, it would have been a good story, possibly great.

Has Gust Front turned you off from other books in this genre?

Hasn't turned me off from other books in the genre, just other books in the series. The Troy Rising series is excellent. This book just doesn't come close.

Have you listened to any of Marc Vietor’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The performance was good, no problems there. It was a story problem.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Boredom

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

Where does Ready Player One rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Top 10

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Art3mis, I like a strong female lead

What does Wil Wheaton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He has a great engagement with the story.

And [MINOR SPOILER], he's even mentioned in the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! One of those books where I was very mixed happy/sad when it ended.

    Any additional comments?

You definitely need to at least know a little about the 80s video game/movie genre, otherwise it'd be difficult to picture everything described in the book. It also helps to have a fondness for MMOs. If you've got those, you'll love this book.

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old - when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer. Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries....
