Somewhere in North Dakota, there is a town called Owl that isn't there. Disco is over, but punk never happened. They don't have cable. They don't really have pop culture, unless you count grain prices and alcoholism. People work hard and then they die. They hate the government and impregnate teenage girls. But that's not nearly as awful as it sounds; in fact, sometimes it's perfect.

What did you love best about Downtown Owl?

I'm in the middle of this book but I feel confident I will enjoy it to the end. The language is so perceptive and the characters so unique. I love getting to know them all.

What about the narrators???s performance did you like?

Usually I'm not a fan of multiple narrators but in this case the narrators brought so much to each chapter, giving each section its own special tone and character.

When Edward Schuyler - a modest and bookish sixty-two-year-old science teacher - is widowed, he finds himself ambushed by female attention. There are plenty of unattached women around, but a healthy, handsome, available man is a rare and desirable creature. Edward receives phone calls from widows seeking love, or at least lunch, while well-meaning friends try to set him up at dinner parties. The problem is that Edward doesn’t feel available. He’s still mourning his beloved wife, Bee, and prefers solitude and the familiar routine of work, gardening, and bird-watching.

    Coming to terms

    Any additional comments?

I imagine you have to be a certain age and at a certain point in your life to enjoy this, but if you have ever been in a deep, long-lasting relationship you will find yourself relating to Edward and his joys and missteps.

The temperature's on "sizzle" again in Beaumont, South Carolina, where peach trees are in season and ripe for the picking. So is its newest entrepreneur, Annie Fortenberry, who has inherited her grandmother's B&B (and its eccentric handyman Erdle Thorney). According to a local psychic she also inherited a spirit from its glory days as a brothel - not the kind of publicity the Peach Tree Bed & Breakfast needs.

I love the Stephanie Plum series read by the same narrator so I thought for sure this would be a hit. Instead the plot was hackneyed, the ending lame and all the voices were retreads of the Plum family without the wit. I won't be fooled again. It's Plum or nothing!

An enchanting New York Times and international best seller and award-winner about life, art, literature, philosophy, culture, class, privilege, and power, seen through the eyes of a 54-year-old French concierge and a precocious but troubled 12-year-old girl.

    Pyles says: "It surprised me"

Someone whose taste I trusted recommended this book. What a terrible disappointment. The story is static and the characters very predictable. The voices of the narrators are terrible and the whole tone of the story is so smug and self-satisfied, I found myself talking back to the book. I noticed the reviews on Amazon are also very divided. But as for me, there was no question: this was a dreadful waste of time. If I could rate it lower than 1 star I would.
