There are a few series that, after finishing a volume, leave me with an almost obsessive urge to get the next volume and continue the story. The Dark Tower books by Stephen King and The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan are two examples (I actually had "Michael Jordan" written... glad I caught that). After finishing the second volume of Michael J. Sullivan's Riyria Revelations I am left with this same feeling. I want the next book...right now! I think I will just have to go buy the print version - if the local book store has it - because this story is really, really good. Definitely do not buy it if you haven't read the first volume though. In that case, go get "Theft of Swords" and hope that by the time you get to the end of "Rise of Empire" audible has released the next book in the series.
Good start to a promising series.
I do have one complaint though: trying to figure out the order of the series on the audible website is impossible. I had to go to the author's site to figure out which book to listen to next (it is "Against the Tide of Years", btw). How hard would it be to mention the order in the description?
The book itself is great and I am excited to see where the story goes from here.
This was not funny. It was stupid. I am not offended by the language but I don't think using profanity makes a book that woud otherwise be boring any better.
I loved this book. It was well written, fast paced, and interesting. I immediately downloaded the second book in the series (Mortals and Deities) and it was just as good or better. I cannot wait for the next one. Anyone looking for a great fantasy series should enjoy listening to Cameron Beierle read Mr. Drake's books. As always, Cameron Beierle is a superb narrator.
This book, as well as the first book in the series, "Shadow Prowler" are absolutely awesome. The only reason not to buy them right now is having to wait for Book 3 to be released. I don't know if the printed version of the final book is available but I will have to find it if audible doesn't publish the audio version soon. This book will not disappoint. Just be sure to listen to book 1 first.
I believe that I have read all of Clancy's books and loved them all. Except for "Red Storm Rising." I found it boring beyond belief and just could not stay interested. I kept hoping that it would pick up but it was just awful all the way through. I imagine that if I had read this book before the cold war ended it would have been much more interesting. However, I found it absolutely mind numbingly boring, almost painful to get through this one. If you have not read or listened to all of Clancy's other books yet, I strongly recommend a them all. They are great but I would certainly stay well away from this one.
I have read all of Brandon Sanderson's books and each of them is excellent. The Way of Kings, however (with the possible exception of his work on the Wheel of Time books) is, in my opinion, easily his best work to date. This book should appeal to anyone who loves vast, epic fantasy series. I can see how readers who do not typically enjoy devoting endless hours to a book or series of books would be daunted by the sheer size of this novel. For those of us who love nothing more than the days and days spent lost in the worlds of Jordan, Martin, Williams, or any of the other great fantasy writers, this book, while great itself, promises even greater things to come.
As an added bonus, the audiobook is read by two of the greatest narrators around. While many narrators can be distracting and take away from the story, Michael Kramer and Kate Reading become the characters in a way that only adds to the listener's enjoyment.
This series has been real good so far. So good that I find myself extremely frustrated at audible for not putting up the next book. This one ends at a particularly suspenseful moment and I am dying to see what happens. Its out of stock at Barnes and Noble too so hurry up Audible!
