The set-up of Mark Haddon's brilliant new novel is simple: Richard, a wealthy doctor, invites his estranged sister Angela and her family to join his for a week at a vacation home in the English countryside. Richard has just re-married and inherited a willful stepdaughter in the process; Angela has a feckless husband and three children who sometimes seem alien to her. The stage is set for seven days of resentment and guilt, a staple of family gatherings the world over.

Great fan of Curious Dog and A Spot of Bother had me rolling in the floor and crying at the same time. Red house missed the mark- the characters were unlikeable and rather whiny. I really can't recommend this one but don't miss the first two.

I just finished the book and I am still not sure what the book is trying to convey to laymen about sociopaths. Poorly written, too wordy, narrator not the right voice for this book. Every 15 minutes I wanted to stop reading but hung in there and still don't know why???

A single raindrop opens a Pandora's box of horrors when the spawn of perverse genetic research performed during World War II - refined by Cold War enemies and perfected by nature - are unleashed on an unsuspecting world. By dawn only a dead city remains, eerily quiet and still except for the mutant beasts who hide from the light, multiply, and await the shadows of day's end.

Pirriwee Public's annual school Trivia Night has ended in a shocking riot. One parent is dead. The school principal is horrified. As police investigate what appears to have been a tragic accident, signs begin to indicate that this devastating death might have been cold-blooded murder. In this thought-provoking novel, number-one New York Times best-selling author Liane Moriarty deftly explores the reality of parenting and playground politics, ex-husbands and ex-wives, and fractured families.

I find Liane Moriarty's books to be incredibly moving. The way she weaves her characters in and out and then entangles them in the guts of the story is masterful. She certainly nailed life in a rich town. You get the good, the bad, and the ugly. This book is about abuse of all kinds: verbal, emotional, and physical. I think it certainly is pertinent to the times. It is set in Australia so the narrator and accent are a bit irritating, but the story overrides all. Definitely a must read for any woman who has ever been controlled by a male, her kids, her schedule, her job, etc.

Dan Starkey arrives on Wrathlin Island to investigate the residents' belief that the Messiah is alive, female, and about to start school there: It's not a commission that turns up everyday. He finds a mess of religious intolerance and illicit drinking in a tiny community that is big on religious fervour but small on hospitality. Apart from the Messiah's mum of course, who's clung to her sanity. And her lager.

I have read most of Colin Bateman's books and they (or I) are so quirky, they never fail to make me laugh. Whenever I am a bit down I read" I predict a riot, murder, Extortion and a carrot cake." I LOVE HIS WRITING but I think you have to suspend belief and just go with Colin on his fantastic voyages.

It keeps you going back and forth in your belief of the activities going on. In the end, our past forms our future. He is a worthy author and this book is worth your time-just keep digging through to the end.

if you need a break from books about dysfunctional families, etc., this is just a simple light hearted mystery that you can read and not think about too much. These books are really valuable to me, because I need some brain drain time and love the cozy mysteries as the remedy. I can't give it a higher rating because it is not the caliber of writing or depth of story to get more. I still recommend it.

Harper Lee’s Pulitzer prize-winning masterwork of honor and injustice in the deep south - and the heroism of one man in the face of blind and violent hatred, available now for the first time as a digital audiobook. One of the best-loved stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has been translated into more than 40 languages, sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, served as the basis for an enormously popular motion picture, and was voted one of the best novels of the 20th century by librarians across the country.

I think I first read To Kill A Mockingbird at age 12 and have read it more times than I can remember. This is the first time I have listened to it and Sissy Spacek did a great job. I did some research on Harper Lee and found information that was new to me: I found her integrity fascinating. Whenever I get down about the state of our country, I read this book and know that even a few people with moral integrity and lack of prejudice can make a difference. Too bad those people are not in Congress. I also grew up in Georgia and was 12 in 1960 so I saw the civil rights fight first hand. How silly people with racial prejudice seem through the eyes of Harper Lee. I applaud her for her courage.

Because protagonist wears stiletos, I thought this book would be more like a Stephanie Plum or Kyra Davis, but it actually had substance to the story and some violence. Not light hearted at all. I found I enjoyed the story once I stopped looking for the jokes. I have purchased her next book and am looking forward to a real journalistic mystery.
