One of the best-known stories in American culture, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has stirred the imagination of young and old alike for over 100 years. Best Actress nominee Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married, Alice In Wonderland), fresh from filming one of this year’s most anticipated films, The Dark Knight Rises, lends her voice to this uniquely American fairy tale.

What would have made The Wonderful Wizard of Oz better?

    Better narration

What could L. Frank Baum have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The book stands on its own. I've just never read it and didn't love it.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Anne Hathaway?

Someone who would have prepared better instead of making one voice by talking through her nose, another by copying from the movie (Cowardly Lion), another like a sing song New Yorker.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    An American classic.

    Any additional comments?

I wonder if she didn't think this project would be so simple for such an accomplished actress that she didn't find time to prepare.

Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer is close to "aging out" out of the foster care system. A community-service position helping an elderly woman clean out her home is the only thing keeping Molly out of juvie and worse.... As she helps Vivian sort through her possessions and memories, Molly learns that she and Vivian aren’t as different as they seem to be. A young Irish immigrant orphaned in New York City, Vivian was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other children whose destinies would be determined by luck and chance.

What did you love best about Orphan Train?

It swept me into the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Orphan Train?

I suppose the woman taking Carmine from her hands and the relief that she is a nice woman who really wants him.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

This was my big problem. The reading made me nervous and I couldn't keep up. I turned it to half speed and it was much more normal sounding. A tad slow but at normal speed it was a high speed race with a high pitched voice.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not just a moment but Molly's affection growing toward Vivian and going to her when she needed help.

    The main character .. Ray.

Anne Elliot is a young woman of perfect breeding and unwavering integrity. Austen wrote of her, "She is almost too good for me." Persuasion is the story of Anne and Captain Wentworth and their long awaited union. The world of country gentry in Regency England serves as a setting while portraying the many aspects of proper society - its failings and humor.

    The book wasn't the problem.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The narrator read like those in the first computer games I ever saw. Every sentence had the same inflection and was robotic. No acting here.

What did you love best about The Girl in the Road?

That the story exploded at the end. That this piece of genius was written by a woman. That I still think about it days after finishing the listen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

None. At first, I didn't know there were two main characters. Their names are too similar for me. I was just confused. And none of them are people you'd want to spend an afternoon with.

Have you listened to any of Dioni Collins and Nazneen Contractor ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The narration is all the way excellent but this is a trick question. I don't see that either have performances on audible other than this one.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Nope.

    Any additional comments?

I didn't like listening to a lot of it. I was confused; did not like the lesbian scenes; hard to struggle to keep up at all. But at the end ... I am so proud of this author. I think maybe reading it would be less confusing than listening. I think I will read it one day. BUT these narrators could not have been better.

No one would ever have guessed that Paulina Paine was deaf, and that her ability to lip-read was astonishing. So the two men who met one day during the showing of a new art exhibition did not realise until too late that the middle-aged tweedy figure sitting out of earshot could understand every word they said. And it had been no ordinary conversation. In fact, Paulina was so shaken by its implications that she went to see Miss Silver straight away.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

    Maybe Agatha Christie fans.

What was most disappointing about Patricia Wentworth’s story?

I could not keep the characters straight. Kept wondering who was this person speaking and when did they enter the story. I liked the initial character but ... alas .. she wasn't really who the story was about.

How could the performance have been better?

It was probably fine for the type of story. Just dull for me at this time,

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Boredom.

It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Book Thief to be better than the print version?

No idea. I don't get this question. I don't normally listen to books I've already read.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Book Thief?

There are many but to choose one, the note written by the mayor's wife to Liesel telling her she knows she's stealing her books but she's welcome to them. There are many lovely kind people in this story that happened during a war.

What about Allan Corduner’s performance did you like?

I can't answer this. The performance did not detract from the story and was perfect.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the step father gave bread to the old man being marched through the city, I had tears.

    Any additional comments?

In addition to this being a wonderful story and an outstanding performance, the writing is vey beautiful. One phrase I remember was, "The clouds arched their backs and looked behind them before moving on." The book is narrated by Death who admits that he is haunted by humans. Very rich imagery.

Where does Last Night at the Lobster rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Bottom half. It was well written and well read but the story just got me down.

Would you be willing to try another book from Stewart O'Nan? Why or why not?

Sure. He did a good job.

Have you listened to any of Jonathan Davis’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    I don't think I have.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes. It make me sad. People can do their best and still get kicked around. I didn't enjoy it. I work in retail and experience this.

    Any additional comments?

The book was recommended to me by someone I met online and don't know. I don't know why. She said it was one of her favorites. There you are.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved the book because I loved all the characters. No favorites.

What about Kirby Heyborne and Keith Szarabajka ’s performance did you like?

Both talented, distinct and appropriate. Szarabajka also does the voice of Yolanada and it's all great,

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I don't want to listen to anything in one sitting.

    Any additional comments?

I have been complaining lately that I don't find many books by women to read. I don't like romance or chicklit. This book was wonderful and I was grateful to find it. The only thing I didn't like is that it makes you care about the characters and lets you anticipate something wonderful happening between them but stops before that scene. For me the book had no ending. It really does annoy me. In real life you would be able to find out what happened and have closure.
