It is 1648, a small village in the Alps: In the thick of a blizzard,a town priest discovers he’s been poisoned. As numbness creeps up his body, he summons the last of his strength and scratches a sign in the frost that will lead the town hangman, his daughter, and the town physician in pursuit of a treasure of the Knights Templar. But the priest’s murderer is already on their trail, and he’s not the only one after the legendary fortune: a dark monk is not far behind, and a band of thieves is roving the countryside, attacking solitary travelers and spreading panic.

Forty years’ accumulation of art, antiques, and family photographs are more than just objects for Stanley Peke - they are proof of a life fully lived. A life he could have easily lost long ago. When a con man steals his houseful of possessions in a sophisticated moving-day scam, Peke wanders helplessly through his empty New England home, inevitably reminded of another helpless time: decades in Peke’s past, a cold and threadbare Stanislaw Shmuel Pecoskowitz eked out a desperate existence in the war-torn Polish countryside, subsisting on scraps, dodging Nazi soldiers.

    Story

It has been a really long time since I read a book that had me sitting on the edge of my seat with my heart pounding like this one. I don't know where this author came from but I cannot wait for him to write another one. This story was just so unique and amazing. What a premise! Very satisfying with each turn of events, the character development and the ending. I have found a new author to look forward to his new books. I don't often recommend books to others, but can enthusiastically recommend this one to anyone looking for a REAL mystery.

this story is plausible, so it was really easy to connect with the characters. I enjoyed the sexual tension between the main characters and hope to hear them together again.
