A moving coming-of-age story set in the 1900s, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn follows the lives of 11-year-old Francie Nolan, her younger brother Neely, and their parents, Irish immigrants who have settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Johnny Nolan is as loving and fanciful as they come, but he is also often drunk and out of work, unable to find his place in the land of opportunity.

Barbara says: "Book: flawless. SKIP THE RECORDED INTRO!!"
"Trees like this one need planting everywhere"
    Overall

What a classic, that does not feel a bit old! This is an annual listen for me. Francie is timeless as is the story of all our lives. Excellent narration

From mega-selling author Jodi Picoult comes an engrossing tale of medical morality and parental responsibility. Charlotte O'Keefe's daughter is born with osteogenesis imperfecta and will endure endless broken bones. Facing unthinkable medical costs, Charlotte considers a troubling solution. If she goes to court and says she would have terminated the pregnancy had she known of her daughter's condition, she might get enough money for a lifetime of medical expenses.

    Amy Augustine says: "Worth it"
"Listen with care, or wait until next year's book"
    Overall

I am a Picoult fan. My last review was title, "Picoult Perfection" for her "Change of Heart". This one is disappointing.

When reporter Ellen Gleeson gets a "Have You Seen This Child?" flyer in the mail, she almost throws it away. But something about it makes her look again, and her heart stops - the child in the photo is identical to her adopted son, Will. Her every instinct tells her to deny the similarity between the boys, because she knows her adoption was lawful. But she's a journalist and won't be able to stop thinking about the photo until she figures out the truth.

    Elaine says: "Excellent Book"
    "Look Again...Listen Twice"
    Overall

Excellent narration and story. A Scottoline winner.

When Nate and Bix Rumstead (a supposedly upstanding cop with serious sobriety issues) find themselves caught up with bombshell Margot Aziz, they think they're just having some fun. But in Hollywood, nothing is ever what it seems.

I was hungry for a good audiobook, but tried this one twice and could not get it down.

The story begins as Colleen and Newell Cerak first learn the doubtful, then shocking news that their daughter, buried five weeks earlier, is still alive. Forming a backdrop to the reunion are the faces of the Van Ryn family, strangers to the Ceraks, who are just coming to terms with the harsh reality that the girl whose bedside they have been posted at for five weeks is not their daughter after all - and that their own daughter, Laura, has already been buried under the name of Whitney Cerak.

    Amanda says: "Great book!"
"Life is what you make it"
    Overall

Amazing story with a strong religious overtone much needed by the families involved but perhaps not what the listener bargained for.

Richard Novak is a modern-day Everyman, a middle-aged divorce trading stocks out of his home. He has done such a good job getting his life under control that he needs no one, except his trainer, nutritionist, and housekeeper. He is functionally dead and doesn't even notice until two incidents (an attack of intense pain that lands him in the emergency room and the discovery of an expanding sinkhole outside his house) conspire to hurl him back into the world.

Patrick OBrien says: "Fun entertaining read/listen"
    "Good listen, lifesaver or not"

In this sweeping, enthralling biography, acclaimed historian David Hackett Fischer brings to life the remarkable Samuel de Champlain - soldier, spy, master mariner, explorer, cartographer, artist, and Father of New France. We remember Champlain mainly as a great explorer. On foot and by ship and canoe, he traveled through what are now six Canadian provinces and five American states. Over more than 30 years he founded, colonized, and administered French settlements in North America.

Jonah says: "Excellent Narration - Illuminating History"
"Father of Nieux Francais in a New Light"

This is an excellent listen. Wonderful narration of a refreshing look at a progressive architect of the Euro-Native civilization in the Champlain Valley of North America & Canada.
