  • Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead

Researcher and thought leader Dr. Brené Brown offers a powerful new vision that encourages us to dare greatly: to embrace vulnerability and imperfection, to live wholeheartedly, and to courageously engage in our lives. In Daring Greatly, Dr. Brown challenges everything we think we know about vulnerability. Based on 12 years of research, her book argues that vulnerability is not weakness but rather our clearest path to courage, engagement, and meaningful connection.

Fulfillment and Exuberance says: "Love Brene Brown, didn't like the narrator"
"Such an important book - such a terrible narrator"

What did you like best about Daring Greatly? What did you like least?

The information is invaluable, unfortunately it has signficantly less of an impact due to the dramatic voice of the narrator.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator reads very dramatically. This isn't fiction...it doesn't require any drama.

They rose up to challenge the status quo and shake the foundations of our world. Francis of Assisi, Teresa of Avila, Mother Mary, and divine rebels throughout the ages-their true legacy is not what they did in their time on earth, but the eternal beacon that they held up for each of us to follow. On Divine Rebels, Caroline Myss and Andrew Harvey offer you an opportunity and a challenge-to listen for the same divine voice that called to history's greatest spiritual trailblazers, and to answer it in your own life.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Caroline as always was spot on. She offered a lot of information about the Saints who have influenced her and ways to access what they've experienced. She explained herself well. She was thorough and very easy to follow.

Andrew Harvey, on the other hand, had me very close to screaming "WILL YOU JUST SHUT UP," more than a few times. It is unfortunate because he had some very valuable experiences and insights, but because he does not respect his listener enough to say it in as few words as possible, he is almost impossible to follow. The words "And" and "Because" should be banned from his vocabulary...permanently. They do not serve his message. I get that he is passionate, but to have more of an impact, or in my case, an impact at all, he needs to pare down his message, distill it, as Caroline does, most of the time.

Would you be willing to try another one of the narrator’s performances?

    Just Caroline, not Mr. Havey.

Did Divine Rebels inspire you to do anything?

    Yes, learn to be concise.

  • Washington: A Life

In Washington: A Life celebrated biographer Ron Chernow provides a richly nuanced portrait of the father of our nation. This crisply paced narrative carries the reader through his troubled boyhood, his precocious feats in the French and Indian War, his creation of Mount Vernon, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention, and his magnificent performance as America's first president.

What made the experience of listening to Washington: A Life the most enjoyable?

The narration is flawless...Mr. Brick's voice is how I would imagine Washington's would be.

What did you like best about this story?

I passed every history test I ever took, and retained nothing. Now at this stage of life I desire knowing how this great country came to be, and this book gives that information from the perspective of its father.

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

Washington! Also the dynamic between Alexander Hamilton and George Washington was portrayed magnificently. Mr. Brick gave by far the best audiobook performance I have experienced to date.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I often cried at the impeccable work ethic and moral fortitude that gave birth to the free life I know today. I am infintely grateful to this book's author and the narrator for devoting themselves to producing it.

    Any additional comments?

I no longer feel utterly ignorant about my country's history, and now am enjoying a newborn curiosity about what happened next, after the era of President Washington. I also wish I could learn to speak as eloquently as they all did then...our language has gorgeous roots.

Jennifer Egan brings her unique gifts as a novelist and short story writer to a compulsively listenable narrative that centers on Bennie Salazar, an aging punk rocker and record executive, and the beautiful Sasha, the passionate, troubled young woman he employs.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Depends on whether the friend would be interested in its particular subject matter

How could the performance have been better?

the narrator's voice probably ruined this book for me. It was monotone and it was hard to tell when different characters were speaking

Did A Visit from the Goon Squad inspire you to do anything?

    wonder about the pulitzer requisites

    Any additional comments?

I think the writing is exceptional, and I think the narration on this audiobook did detract from its story. Overall though I am not sure why the book was so praised, it offered a dance of tangled characters whose connection wasn't always clear till too late in the particular story. Suspense was done well throughout.

Working in Hollywood is always about getting to the top. Or on top, as feisty producer Claudia Dostis prefers. But when she contends with her sexy adversary, Leandro Mandalor, the stakes change. Her opponent is definitely up to Claudia's challenge. He convinces her they must come together in the office and in the bedroom. Suddenly, getting on top has a whole new meaning and leads to a new level of satisfaction. But can Claudia let go of her need to succeed long enough to allow someone else to win?

Single mom Lizabeth Kane isn't exactly carpenter material: She's never picked up a hammer in her life. But she desperately needs the construction job that builder Matt Hallahan is offering. And even though he knows trouble is ahead, Matt can't refuse Lizbeth's irresistible smile.

    Overall

i had difficulty enjoying this book because the characters went from being introduced to being in love in lightspeed. now granted, love at first sight is a very appealing idea, but if that is what was trying to be achieved here even the description of it was so lacking that i found myself saying, "oh, i guess they're in love? hmm i wonder when that happened?" in addition to that the narrator, to me, sounds like a middle aged woman who smokes too much. this is my first novel by the author, and i believe it will be my last.

Addie Downs and Valerie Adler will be best friends forever. That's what Addie believes after Valerie moves across the street when they're both nine years old. But in the wake of betrayal during their teenage years, Val is swept into the popular crowd, while mousy, sullen Addie becomes her school's scapegoat.

    Overall

I've read all of Ms. Weiner's books--and this one is the first and only to disappoint me. It was very predictable and felt as if I waited too long for the characters to develop, and once they did the ending was cut short into a few paragraphs. Didnt get to see the main relationship evolve at all, there were many many details missing from the first kiss to the end of the book. I still love Jennifer, I hope her future works provide more of the storytelling in her other work.
